Angry Metal grinding noise comming from my engine!!!

This happens a few times in a month, and it does it in all weather conditions. I turn my car on, and I heard this squealing noise, or so I thought, from the belt while inside the car. I popped the hood, and the squealing nosie turned into a metal on metal grinding noise comming from the pulley. But I'm not too sure as to where or what is causing it. After awhile, the sound disappears like nothing happened. Then it'll start up again a few weeks later. Very disturbing!

I drive a 99 Z/28 with about 80000+. I've heard from several people that it could be a bearing or even the alternator giving out. Thought I'd ask you guys before I take it into the shop. If its easy to fix, I'd like to know how. I need the experience. If not, please point me in the right direction.

Peace

Figure out which pulley/bearing is making your noise and it shouldn't be too hard to fix. If it were all the time it might be easier for you to diagnose, but you might want to start by removing the serpentine belt and spinning the tensioner and alternator pulleys by hand, while listening for the culprit. Another way is to use a stethoscope (long *** screwdriver with handle pressed to ear) while the engine is running, just make sure you don't get hurt or screw up the engine worse. Moving parts + screwdriver in wrong place = .

Pull the belt when you hear the noise. If it goes away, it's the pulley. If not, it's an internal issue.

I had a squeeking metal sound on my old 97 Z . Finally figure out it was a loose header bolt that allowed the header to slightly move on the bolt producing the noise. Maybe something similar on yours. I had machanics and others telling me the rings were broke and crap like that too. Good luck.
