Is it me: or does 6th Gear have no get up and go?

This my first time owning a 6 speed vehicle? But I'm not sure if something is wrong with my car, but 6 gear doesn't really have any pickup?

Is this gear for cruising only?

don't worry...that's just the way it is. I only turn about 2000 rpm's at 80 mph hence the lack of power. Just go down to 5th and have some fun.

I have a auto, but I hear the people with manuals say that sixth gear is so high you have to be in fifth to top out the car.

a lot of 6 speed cars have a higher top speed in 5th gear.

its not supposed to get up and go, its for cruising only... do a little double clutch down hit 5th or 4th even and pass people then go back...

you'll enjoy having 6th for the highway, and like RL, said,
just downshift to have some get up and go.

I think the stock ratio is something like .62:1.

in 93 Fbods the 6th gear ratio was .62, from then on out it was changed to .50

no reason to ever try and get some get up and go out of your 6th gear. it is the 2ND! overdrive. Good for highway crusing, and is still good enough to move the car around, but you have 5 other choices of gear when some big time power is needed to the ground

Double clutching is a waste of time for a car with synchros.

Is it okay to downshift from 6th to 5th even if I am going 80 mph or more and then to 5th?

hehe, I'm pretty sure if you want, you could go all the way down to THIRD but only have about 600 revs left. Or something like that. 4th gear is ok too. But I really don't see how you would ever need that much passing power. 5th is perfectly fine, but while doing 80, the revs should be high enough in 6th to have ample passing power.

from 6th to 5th to 5th?

but yeah why wouldnt it be ok to shift from 6th to 5th at 80, thats well within the rpm range of both gears.

if you are cruising at 80 in 6th and want to go for a roll race though, I would go right into 3rd not 5th though

EDIT: didnt see that Gloveperson answered the same thing. but yea 5th will probably cover anywhere from 30-160 if you really wanted it to.

For normal driving yes, but doube clutching gives a smoother downshift, puts you in the power range for the gear youre going into, and actually puts LESS stress on the tranny and synchros. I double clutch all my downshifts because I'm in the habit of it, and I often drive vehicles that require it (from old trucks to Formula Dodge racecars), better to practice all the time....
