Manual Shifting an A4
I know what you mean on that one Capn Pete, but slow delay you feel is the Lock Up Converter, when it is in O/D, the Torque Converter Locks up, then if you want to pass and press the gas pedal down, the tranny delays because the Converter has to get out of Lock up mode, and then it delays a little to drop into 3rd... Which I think the Lock Up Converter would have had an extra button to lock it up and take it out of Lock up mode for passing quicker...
Sometimes I will drive my car in Drive, when I am driving through town but most of the time I will leave it in O/D because I usually hit 45 MPH or faster when I am driving in town...
I can agree with you on the fact that if I am not going to be driving over a certain speed then leaving it in Drive is Fine...

Manual shifting an A4 unless you're just doing it for fun cause you're bored off your mind = pointless.
The tranny knows when to shift... that's the whole point of an automatic. If knows what to do. Not only that, but if you try and manual shift at a dragstrip, it's more difficult because when you shift an auto by hand, there's a delay before the tranny actually shifts. It's difficult to account for this delay and not make your car shift either too early, or too late (ie: bounce off the rev limiter a few times!).
I tried it once at an 1/8th mile track just for kicks, and I shifted into third too late (well, I moved the stick in time but the delay caught me) and I bounced off the rev limiter like crazy. Everyone when I was back was like WTF WAS THAT! lol.
Even if you get it right your times won't be any faster. Just stick it in OD and be happy
If you wanna shift yourself, get an M6.

I would not, I repeat not, engine brake or mess around with the transmission period. You can blow an accumulator by doing that. Sooner or later you will do it too early and f^^k up the tranny.

i have a 95 z28 auto, and the previous owner purchased a hypertech programmer. And the first day i got it, i got on the throttle hard, of course, and it got up to about 6200 rpm and it went REER REER REER and it woudlnt' up shirt into 3rd, scared the crap out of me. but now whenever i get on it, once it gets up to 6000-6200 rpm, i just left off the gas and it shifts. i dont know if the tranny is messed up or what. but when i drive it normally it works fine. only when i run it hard do i have to shift it that way.
