Magnaflow opinions??

Im considering buying a magnaflow exhaust but I was wondering what the sound is like because I think my stock exhaust is just to quiet. How is it compared to other cat backs.

Re: Magnaflow opinions??

I have Magnaflow and I'm very satisfied with it. It fit better than the Flowmaster system I installed and is stainless for not much more money. Listen to it at ls1sounds.com as I found the videos very good and my car really sounds like the one in the videos. The videos in particualar I am referring to have before/after headers recordings. I got mine on ebay for ~$350. I think it sounds good, louder than stock but not annoying-this is with headers. Only bad thing about the sound is it cackles some but not too bad. The muffler was so pretty when I took it out of the box it's a shame it's under the car and not visible.

Also try a search for Magnaflow on here to get a whole bunch more opinions.

My car is basically stock (no LT's damn CA laws) how do you think it would sound compared to my stock exhaust. I want something that will be louder but not horribly loud where you get a bunch of interior drone. Besides the kit is priced right between 350 and 380 on lmpperformance.

My buddy has a magnaflow on his 02 ss, and I have to be honest... it's one of the quietest catbacks out there, his stock SS exhaust sounded better.

I have a Magnaflow on my 01 z28 and I really like the sound. No interior drone and I've never heard it "cackle". Only thing is I wish it were a little louder. At idle it almost sounds stock.

Re: Magnaflow opinions??

compared to stock it will sound amazing.

the MF sounds great if you plan to keep the cats, otherwise it gets a bit raspy. but WITH cats it is awesome.

and flows GREAT and looks even better

Re: Magnaflow opinions??

I have the Magnaflow catback, and it is wonderful. It sounds great, at high rpm's it is aggressive, but never obnoxious. Nice looking tips as well.

Re: Magnaflow opinions??

When I first put mine on, it sounded STOCK. No one knew I had exhaust, regardless of rpm.......I was actually kinda sad...........then after a month or so it broke in, and had a nice tone to it. Still wasn't loud until you got on it, even then, it would only be noticable outside, and it DID sound nice when you got on it........Then I got an offroad Y, and I <3 it.

Re: Magnaflow opinions??

Thanks guys for the info on the MF I think that for now I'm going to go with a cutout from QTP just so that I could have it obnoxiously loud when I want and turn it off at the touch of a button. Once I save up some more $$$ I might get a good cat back such as the MF or GMMG.

never heard of an exhaust breaking in. i run edelbrock shorties and a high flow cat on my 95. i would do the exact same exhaust again.

Re: Magnaflow opinions??

i love my magnaflow cat back.
IMO, its the best looking cat back.
also, little or no "drone" when going down the highway......which was the most important part for me..........

its not too loud or too quiet......just enough to let people know im there.

Mufflers CAN wear out over time, for some reason mine was quiet as hell for a month at least....then one day all of a sudden it got louder....

My Magnaflow was very quiet for a few weeks after install too, this is why.
The Magnaflow uses packing inside the muffler to dampen sound output. In their own words:
"Packed between the steel mesh and the steel shell is a high temperature acoustical absorbing material. This dense wall of fiber filters out the harsh exhaust vibrations producing MagnaFlow`s rich, powerful, performance tone."
The Magnaflow is along the lines of the classic 'glass pack' cherry bomb muffler just in a different form, and it does cackle some like cherry bombs, atleast with headers. When hot exhaust moves through the muffler the packing melts/burns/blows out of the muffler decreasing its sound dampening effect. Old buds of mine would always pour some gasoline into their new cherry bombs and light it to eliminate the break in period.

Other mufflers will not "break in" such as a chambered system like Flowmaster.

Re: Magnaflow opinions??

I have a Magnaflow that came with my car, and it is pretty quite just cruising around town and on the interstate. When you get on it its pretty loud though. I've also heard that is a pretty free flowing design despite it being so quiet. Its good if you drive the interstate a lot(like I do) and/or don't want any unwanted attention from the cops.

If you go the cutout route, DO NOT mount the thing under your rear seat. This location spills hot exhaust onto your floorboard, stripping the paint off. It also rattles your interior to pieces. I've also heard of a guy needing to replace his shock because all of the heat broke the seal.

Mount your cutout after the rear axle, maybe fabricate some sort of setup like they have on a borla exhaust.

Re: Magnaflow opinions??

i remember reading somewhere that the magnaflow catback is one of the best flowing catbacks.

i have no idea if its true or not.

im 99.9% in love with my magnaflow catback, but that .1% of me wants to put a loudmouth on my car and just be loud as hell!
but the conservativeness in me wont do it.
