MAF screen... does anyone have the real facts on it's function?

Can anyone state the real facts on the function of the MAF screen? I search the internet and I hear contradictory reponses to this question. One site says the screen on the MAF sensor exists to reduce turbulence and to 'straighten out' air flow. Another site says it is merely a "debris screen". Some say you can remove it and realize some minor performance gains while others say, without it, your MAF sensor will report incorrect data to the PCM resulting in a richer air/fuel mixture.

Doesn't anyone have the real facts?

More on MAF funtion...

Additionally, a couple of WEB sites have reported that GM removed the MAF screen from the 2002 LS6. Is this true? If GM shipped the Corvette without a MAF screen then shouldn't it be safe for us to remove ours?

It is to straighten out the air flow...it is not to stop debris, if debris getts past your air filter there's no way that screen is going to stop it!. Removing the screen will give some performance gains...at the most like 1hp. If you are worried about taking the screen off think about this...all aftermarket MAF sensors do NOT have screens...after market MAF ends do NOT have the screen...and if you are still worried you can take it off without destroying it so if you need to you can put it back on.

Well put. Really isn't that big of a deal. I did it in my WS6 not much of a difference ,just a little somthing extra. Don't worry about damaging it. My car has been to the dealership 4 times for service since i took it off and they have said nothing.
