I have heard the LS1 will not fit under the stock LT1 Z28 hood, so you'll probably have to buy an aftermarket hood as well.

Man, I think that would be opening "Pandora's Box". It's been done before, don't get me wrong, but I honestly don't think it's worth it. I think you'll get just about everybody else tell you the same thing as well.

First of all, the LS1 isn't "God's gift" to the 4th gen Camaro. Sure it's a great engine, but it's not worth going through the trouble of making it fit under the hood of a pre-'98 car for. Let me tell you straight out that my car (2002 Z28) was beat at the track recently by more than one LT1 Camaro. Not by a whole hell of a lot, but they were running mid 13's to my 14.1. Obviously there's no way that they were bone stock, whereas my car is, but that just shows that with a little work, you can make an LT1 car as fast as if not faster than an LS1 car. The biggest difference is probably the heads. The LS1 heads flow amazingly (right from the factory), so bolt on a good set of aftermarket heads onto your LT1, accompanied with a better camshaft, and you'll walk away from a stock, or near stock LS1.

Ultimately, do what you want, but I think it would cost way too much, and be too big of a PITA (Pain In The A$$ )!!! because an LS1 won't be cheap to buy, and they don't drop in under the hood of an LT1 car either --- they sit higher than LT1's (which can be remedied by a hood with a hood scoop), but again, that's where there's more cost associated.

IMO, use the money you'd have to spend to do a swap, and sink it into your LT1 --- I think you'd be quite happy with it's performance.

i'm in the process of this swap. for me, it is well worth the money spent. i bought a wrecked '99 ss with 55k on it for $3,000.
im using the leather interior, motor/trans, and most everything else.
im porting the heads a little bit myself, and i have a 230/224 cam for it. should be around 410+rwhp with longtubes.

Hey man, that's cool. If you can go about it that route (I mean, picking up a complete car so you've got everything you need right there) then by all means. I just figure that if your goal is to make your car faster than it is with the LT1, the "cheapest" & "easiest" route isn't doing an LS1 swap. But if you're willing to do a little extra work, then I guess it's worthwhile (and unique too! )

well, the main reason im doing it, is because my LT1 has 140,000 miles on it. it needs new rings in the motor, and the trans is getting pretty notchy, and the interior isnt what it used to be. it could also use a new paint job, and im installing t-tops from the ss too.
also right now im probably sitting around 375rwhp with the baseline programming, and i should be around 410+ with the camm'd LS1.
anyways, in a situation like mine it isnt all that bad of an idea to go LS1.

I hate to bring back such an old post... very old, but since I blew the headgaskets, and it looks like the engine got a little toasted, with 130,000 on the clock. I figure the rebuild and the cam/heads will cost me at least $4000, plus the T56, add another $1500, I could get an LS1 w/T56 for $3200 shipped! Add the other components and the ability to sell the LT1 parts to pay for a little bit and the LS1 swap w/k-member etc. etc. becomes cheaper, especially when I can do the mods etc. etc.
