LT Headers Question

When getting headers is it true that it can cause the engine to over heat and cause problems or is that just some bullcrap?

Re: LT Headers Question

I hear it's only a problem for cars running too rich/lean and needs to be timed. A lot of times if you put new lt's on a new engine, it will run rich/lean until you get it tuned/break it in, and you'll need to keep the engine and headers very cool.

But don't quote me on that, that's what I heard.

Re: LT Headers Question

I've had 2 cars with headers and never had a problem with temperature. One set was ceramic coated and another wasn't coated at all.

Re: LT Headers Question

No, I'm saying new engines may run rich/lean and may cause the headers to overheat. The car won't run lean just by putting headers on.

Re: LT Headers Question

Should i have any problems then if it has 49,000 miles on it and how many miles do LS1's usually stay healthy till stuff starts breaking?

Re: LT Headers Question

I wouldn't think LT's would cause a rich/lean condition so extreme that they alone would f' up your car. I'm running my LT's right now without a tune and they've performed flawlessly. Of course there can be some improvements made with a tune but I think you'll be just fine installing them without

Re: LT Headers Question

You're gonna be fine man, don't worry. The headers itself aren't going to cause your car to run rich/lean. But what I was saying is a NEW ENGINE usually runs rich/lean etc., till it's broken in, and may cause the headers to overheat during tuning.

Re: LT Headers Question

Don't sweat installing a set of long tube headers. No matter what they're manufactured out of or whether or not they're coated, you won't have any problems with overheating. If overheating occurs, it's being caused by another condition. We have installed a LOT of long tube headers on LS1/LS6's, and we've never had any overheating issues. The vast majority of the cars getting headers don't need any tuning other than shutting the rear O2 sensors off. The computer will typically be able to adjust for the new mods. Very very seldom do we see a car that needs added tuning beyond turning off the rear O2's after a header swap.

Feel free to give me a call or shoot me an e-mail at trevor@texas-speed.com if you have any other questions or concerns. I'm here to help.
