Also...you're right, your car is rated at 325hp but the '98-'00 SS was rated at 320, not 305. The '98-'00 Z28s were rated at 305 and the '01-'02 Z28s were 310. So...both the SS and Z28 got a 5hp bump, not 20.

What is the difference then, between a Z28 and SS, is it just the manifold? I've always wondered how an SS can have more HP than the Z28. I knew it wasn't because of the hood scoop, so is it because of the intake? i.e. Z28 uses LS1, SS uses LS6?
Is that also the main difference between an LS1 vette and an LS1 camaro SS? (I'm strictly referring to the 2002 LS1 btw)
Thanks!!!
No, the difference in horsepower between the Z28 and SS (or T/A and WS6) is the EXHAUST system. The LS1 engine used is identical (although I think that the "ram air" is maybe credited for a few HP, I'm not sure about that
).
Basically, as far as I'm concerned, the LS1 engine ('Vette or F-body) makes ~350 fly-wheel HP
. The exhaust and transmission determines the RWHP
.
And again, '98 - '00 F-bodies have the original "LS1" intake. '01/'02 F-bodies have the "LS6" intake on the LS1, no EGR, and the 6.0L truck cam.....................kapeesh?!

ya know I would show up to a hp chat on 2002 cars...
anyways... I personally feel that the cam didnt hurt us (01, 02) since we made up for the lower end and still have a high end pull..
makes no sense to have a car that cant run in the lower rpm strongly.. isnt that what vtec is all about? heheh make more power at higher rpms...
with 01 and 02 we have decent torque everywhere.. at least I like it.. not peaky at all.. very smooth..
as for the LS6 block... even the LS1 has windows btw cylinders but the LS6 has larger ones.. thats how I understand it..
since every car is different, I wont say that any bone stock SS is anymore capable of pulling more HP than any Z28.. and being that you will more easily find a bare Z28 than an SS which can save hundreds of pounds, I would say, the Z28 has a better chance on the strip. The SS with its upgraded suspension should do better on the turns tho..
thats my take on the whole deal..
as for factory ratings.. bah! get a dyno run in or 40... find out what yours does..
