ls6 what is it?

Hey guys, sorry this might sound like a retarded question, but it's probably better to ask and find out than go on not knowing or acting like you do. I hear lots of talk about ls6....what exactly is ls6? Is this a type of ls1 engine? Sorry i feel really dumb. But thanx for answering.

The LS6 engine came in the ZO6 corvettes. it has better intake manifold, cam+valvetrain. the heads flow better to. I think thats it.

Just a better motor.Better flowing heads with lightweight valves.Heads make better torque than LS1 heads.Higher lift cam, better intake, block and other small stuff make a more efficient motor.

I thought LS1s had the LS6 intake? Isn't that how we have 325Hp versus 305?

Yeah they came with a Ls6 intake. but it equals out because they also put a smaller cam in it. Or so i hear?

the LS6 engine is pretty stout motor, the block I believe is made of a diff. material, the heads flow way better and make much better torque, the valvetrain is stronger yet lighter and the cam is bigger, the intake manfolds flow better than the LS1 intake, and their exhaust system is much better. I believe that the valves on a Z06 are titanium (sp?)

From '03 (and some of '02 production) on the entire bottom end (apart from the pulley/harmonic balancer) is the same, intake was redesigned for the LS6 but appeared on the LS1 at the same time ('01). The Z06 has a titanium exhaust, hence the weight saving (thinner not so much because it's stronger, but because it's less dense and doesn't corrode, so can be made thinner even than stainless). The valves are steel, but hollow, made in two parts and welded together in the middle of the stem. The exhaust valve is filled with sodium and potassium, which is molten at running temperatures, for heat transfer. LS6 valve spring rates are higher. So the difference betweeen '03 LS1 and LS6 bare engines is head assemblies (casting is different too) and cam.

LS6 heads have the "D" shped ports for better flow. LS6 blocks have a "improved" PCV stystem and "windows" to equalize internal pressure. They also have a slightly larger cam and lighter valvetrain.
01-02 F-bods got the LS6 intake, but some of the HP was negated by the installation of the 5.3 "truck cam" for more mid-range TQ.

Another interesting thing is that some Camaro's have the LS6 block. If I recall correctly, 10% of 2001s and 25% of 2002s have the LS6 block. It doesn't mean there's a performance increase, because all the other parts are LS1 parts. The blocks are just interchangeable for when they run out of LS1 blocks.
Ever hear of that?

those HP numbers are bogus. it may be what they rated them at, but i don't think ANY ls1 f-bod came with 305 FWHP... that may be why it was so easy for chevy to up the rating of the 2000+ models and the SS models so much, because the original numbers were so under-rated...

Right. But what I meant is that for the 1998-2002 LS1, I thought that the earlier ones had a different intake than the later ones. That is why I thought there was a HP increase. All the 1998-2002s have the LS6 plastic intake then?

no, in '00 or '01, i can't remember which year, they switched from the LS1 intake to the LS6 intake. i think it was good for a few horses, but i've heard that they also put a less agressive cam in the same year to even out the HP. somebody confirm that?

No .. the cam change was to meet smog requirements ... in addition to the LS6 intake they also elminated the EGR and coupled with the cam change they were able to also meet smog requirements ...
