ls6 heads/cam/intake worth $1k??
ls6 heads/cam/intake worth $1k??
A friend of a guy I know has a z06, I think it's an '03, and he's putting new heads, cam, etc on it and wants to sell his used ls6 heads, cam, and intake for about $1000...
The zo6 has a little under 8k miles on it, so the parts are farily new...does this sound like a good deal to you? I think I'd use the heads and intake, but get a bigger cam. I'm not comfortable changing the heads myself--any ideas (ballpark) what someone would charge to install all these goodies?

Re: ls6 heads/cam/intake worth $1k??
considering that the heads alone are worth about $1000.00 yes it is a good deal.
installation will vary from place to place but figure about $800.00 or so for time and material for a shop to install the heads and cam.

Re: ls6 heads/cam/intake worth $1k??
Thanks for the replies...I think I'm going to buy the parts.
Hey Demon SS, does ForceFed do installs? I'm close by (lexington), and you were recommended by someone when I was looking to do heads/cam earlier in the summer. I'm thinking about doing headers/heads/cam all at once so I just have to get it all tuned once...

Installation isn't that bad either, check out www.ls1howto.com , they have detailed instructions and a parts list.

give you a good price on a package deal.
Re: ls6 heads/cam/intake worth $1k??
Hey Scott,
It's interesting that you mentioned head porting--I was talking with someone today that says the $1k might be better spent just getting my ls1 heads ported...what do you think about that?
I'd be getting the ls6 intake, and the heads for $1k, so figure the intake is $200 of that...so the heads are about $800. Surely my LS1 can be ported to be better than (or at least equal to) stock ls6 heads, right? I guess the question is how much $$$...
and, if I put a big cam in at the same time the springs would have to be upgraded on either head, correct? So that's a wash between the two...
If my thinking on the above stuff is correct, I think I may just work with what I've got, and put the $1k to getting some headers, a more aggressive cam, and ported. Your thoughts?

Re: ls6 heads/cam/intake worth $1k??
I would recommend the LS6 head. Strictly because it flows really nice in its stock form, has higher compression, and because you really wont get a great porting job done on your LS1 heads for 800 bucks. Hand porting is very expensive, and its almost better to go with a CNC port job because of its greater chance of accuracy. By the way, most places charge 1200 for LS6 cores, so you are getting a damn good deal on those heads. AND, if you ever want to make your motor serious in the future, you have a great starting point for your head porting.
Also, you should consider possibly just going with a more aggressive cam than the LS6 cam/heads. My cam did 409 on stock heads, and it is extremely driveable, feels just like stock and has a great idle. You wont make close to that on your LS6 heads and cam, just something to consider, it all depends on what you want.

Re: ls6 heads/cam/intake worth $1k??
Agreed, LS6 head is a very versatile piece. I use them. And I will be reporting my stage IIR's into a stage III this winter when I build my 427 unless I can get my hands on a new set of ls-6 heads for a reasonable price.

buy the LS6 heads for $1000.00, with the LS6 intake and cam. for $2200.00 we'll port the LS6 heads to a stage 1 level and clean, resurface and assemble them with Patriot Dual springs, upgraded the valves to 2.02/1.57 and add bronze guides, design a custom cam and install it all with new hardened pushrods, gm bolts and gaskets, etc. Dyno tuning $450.00 total $3650.00
sell your stock heads for about $200.00, the LS6 cam for say $75.00 or so and your down to $3375.00. for $500-600 more you now have a killer LS6 heads and cam setup.
me I would go the way of the LS6 heads.
