LS6 Cam?????

How much of an increase would this be over a stock 99 LS1 cam?

Re: LS6 Cam?????

You should make what an LS6 vette makes. Yes, they have better heads but full bolt-ons should offset this difference. We're talking 360-ish on a 01/02 car.

Do a search for this cam. You'll be pleased, and have a stock idle.

I was going to run this cam because a used one is cheap and the LS6 springs are also low-budget. Instead I decided on the MTI BI as I could still run the inexpensive LS6 springs and probably make a little more power- but at the expense of some idle quality. Anyway, a used cam and some LS6 springs could have you well on the way to a cam swap for a small amount of $.

Re: LS6 Cam?????

the work isn't worth the cam swap. if i heard right the cam is actually less aggressive but it has less lobe seperation or whatever and the heads flow better giving the engine more HP than our LS1? I may be wrong

I've read otherwise.

Re: LS6 Cam?????

I don't know the specs of the stock LS1 cam. But the 2002 LS6 cam specs are .551/.541 lift and 204/218 @ .050 and 117.5 LSA. The LS6 cam has a .050 smaller base circle, though and you need longer pushrods to use it in a stock LS1.

Re: LS6 Cam?????

aren't stock ls1 cams someplace around 195/200 and .500" lift?

so the LS6 is a bit more aggressive, but its the heads on the engines that make the power difference.

hundreds of dollars for springs, gaskets, pushrods, not to mention the cam. all for 20hp...not worth it.

if you want stock idle...check out the cheaTR cam from Thunder racing

You could get a used cam, springs, and push rods all for cheaper than just a new cheatr cam though. The LS6 cam is proven.

Re: LS6 Cam?????

It all depends on what you want. Some people say anything smaller than a tr224 is a waste, but its up to the individual. you can get new LS6/LS2 springs from SDPC for ~$56 for a set, get a LS2 timing chain if yours is higher milage and running shorter push rods is debatable. There are several guys on tech running the LS6 cam on stock length PRs that have tried the shorter but found the longer were quieter. either way I wouldn't keep the stockers.

For the price, check around for a used GT2-3. Its a LPE grind thats a bit more agressive than the LS6 but with the same characteristics and I've seen them for sale for under $200. You can even run the newer LS6 springs w/it. LPE does.

If you do opt for the LS6 cam get the 02 up.

The only thing about the LS6 or GT2-3 is that they are peaky. They kick in around 3k rpm. I personally don't see much under 3k when I racing though. Something like the B1 will kick in earlier and still pull up top, but won't have the sleeper qualities. Ya, the CheaTr is cool, but the .6" lift will kill springs much quicker.

You will not see the same rwhp as a Z06 w/this cam only. The Z06's I've seen dyno'd around 270-280ish rwhp. Their heads flow much better and the valves are lighter.

Re: LS6 Cam?????

Thought I'd throw this in. For a cam on a budget you could get the new Gen 3 Hot Cam kit. The whole kit is $430 from Scoggin-Dickey. It comes with the cam and springs. I think you can get cam only from Summit or Jegs for a good price, too. The specs are .525/.525 and 219/228 @ .050 and 112 LSA. Lift is for stock 1.7 rockers.

Re: LS6 Cam?????

For that price you can get the GT2-5 from LPE for $250 (same specs as the MTI C1 "Hammer" cam), get some LS6 springs for $60 and PRs for $110, make more power and have a few extra bucks to pay for the gaskets.

Re: LS6 Cam?????

GT2-3 is STOCK sounding. The hot cam idles like a bigger cam, but w/out the power. GT2-5 would be noticable.

A friend of mine got 400 whp out of the GT2-3 and some ported head. All in a package that idled exactly like stock.
