ls1 underrated?

Hey, i'm from allfordmustangs.com and we are having this dispute.. The question is, are the Ls1's ACTUALY 325 hp at the crank or are the underrated? I have seen many times that they are putting down like 317 to the wheels on the dyno.. I also have heard that they are the same engine that are in the vettes, but they just lower the rating to make it look like the vette is weak or somethign like that...

Thanks guys

Actually I think they are 345 ( non ram air ) at the crank but I know for a fact they are underated due to insurance reasons... and yes 300-315 dyno resaults are extremly common in 2001+ 2000 and below are more 290-305

Years of the LS1

1998-2000 - Better cam, but no LS6 intake manifold

2001-2002 - Milder cam than 1998-2000, but recieves the LS6 intake manifold.

Probably explains why the 01-02's dyno higher

Ok, first of yes they are the exact same engine that goes into the corvette. And yes they are underrated. Gm didnt want people buying a car for 20K less knowing that they would be getting the same performance. So they advertised a lower power rating. This also helped sky rocketing insurance rates for f-bodys. Ive seen completely stock cars put down 320hp at the rear wheels. Ive also seen a stock car get a re-tune, and lay down 347hp at the wheels. The LS1 in GM F-Body's is most definetly underrated.

I have put quite a few miles in C5 Vettes (A 98,99, and 01), and my Z28 (completely stock) feels just as fast as a Vette in a straight line (the corners are a different story!!). I have read alot about Z28/SS "freaks" that put 330hp to the rear wheels completely stock. There is also a guy around here who ran a stock 2001 (I think) Z28 at 12.9! Definitely underrated.

My stock 2002 Camaro Z28 dyno'd at 308 rwhp. It's rated at 310 hp. What an efficient drivetrain!

My '99 SS put down 300.0 rwhp with the paper filter still in. MM & FF ran a 12.89 in a stock '02SS. Hard to argue with that.

My car has 2.73's and a steel driveshaft and still made 297 to the rear wheels stock. Would've possibly made more, but it hit the speed limiter a couple of hunderd rpms before redline.

I wonder what it would make w/the aluminum one...?

Yup, LS1 is underrated for sure.

1998GT,

First off, welcome to the Z28 board!. I really respect and appreciate the fact that you dropped in to ask the question. I own a '01 Z28 but have always admired the GT Mustangs and love it when there's FRIENDLY competiiton b/t the two old rivals: Mustang & Camaro. I'm not one of those who bag on GT owners (but I do scoff at the V-6's; to me American muscle has to have a V-8, IMO). I just like American muscle in all its forms. So, I admire your bravery for chiming in and hope the decades-old rivalry remains... but in the spirit of FRIENDLY competition!

BTW, I'm at ~330 hp with my A4 coupe with minor mod's (air filter element; power chip).

Regards,
Daryl

PS- love the look of the '05 Mustangs and the Bullit 'Stangs!

An air filter will not net higher hp. K&N filters, or any kind that you wash rather than replace do not add power to a motor, nor do they free up power that was already there. They are simply cheaper to maintain in the long run. The benefit from them is simply that you don't have to run to the store every time your filter gets dirty, you can wash it instead. And for the people that say they did a filter swap and then dyno'd their car and saw an increase, there are so many variables when equating hp that anything could have contributed to a higher number. Lets say the temp was cooler, your motor wasn't quite as hot because it got to sit longer. And even if the conditions were exactly the same, a car will never dyno the exact same numbers back to back. It might be close, within 2-3 hp but it wont ever be identical. Also, what chip did you put in? I've never heard of a chip for LS1 f-bodies.
