ls1 underrated?

about everyone i talk to tells me that the ls1 camaros are very under rated and make 20 -30 more horsepower than what the factory says they do. now i personally believe that but i have a few mustangs friends who dont. can anyone show me some type of proof of these camaros making more horses than the factory says???

You could do a search for people's dyno numbers on this site.

Tell them this: "Do you know what kind of engine this is? It's an LS1. Do you know what kind the COVETTE HAS? Oh, that's right, it's an LS1. So let me see here... a Corvette has an LS1 and has 350hp, and I have an LS1... I get it!!! I've got 350hp too!!!"

I don't know if you wanna take it that far but yeah, that's what it basically comes down to. Corvettes only dyno a tad more because of MINOR differences in the engine, basically the cam. Most people won't believe just because they don't WANT TO. But yeah, If they don't, who cares, it's your car not theirs. I wouldn't be worried unless the sole purpose I bought the car was to look good to other people.

I think the real numbers for the LS1 are 320HP/345TQ, based on a replacement motor in my friend's Camaro parts magazine.

Keep in mind the low dyno numbers for this motor in the F-Body are around 285 RWHP, so I think 320HP sounds about right.

I'd say your average LS1 F-body has more than 320hp.

Let's say your drivetrain loss percentage is 15%. 15% of 350hp is 52.5hp. 350hp - 52.5hp = 297.5hp to the wheels.

Now, that's just a rough estimate on my part, but I think 15% loss may be a realistic number for an automatic tranny. Let's try 12% for a T56 car. 12% of 350hp is 42hp. 350hp-42hp = 308hp to the wheels. Doesn't sound very far off.

I'm not claiming to be some kind of expert and saying these numbers are fact, but I think most of our cars are pushing anywhere from 340-360 crank horsepower stock.

There's a couple slight differences when you compare a Corvette to a F-body, the biggest of the two IMO are the Vette having true duals and an independent rear. The true duals don't lose as much power in restriction as the F-bods, but the IRS sucks up a bit more than the live axle. I'd still say after all's said and done that the two should be putting similar numbers out to the wheels, leading me to believe they have fairly similar crank numbers.

Those mustang guys must have been on Mars for the last few years...

are they car guys, or what? They must REALLY keep to themselves if they don't know what's up by now. I wonder if they've even seen an LS1 Camaro before. If they don't believe it by now, why even argue with them? Camaros will always be 14 second cars with "350s," just like 5.0 mustangs. In fact, 5.0s are faster with a decent driver. Ha.

I have never read of an SS LS1 dynoing anything less than 315 hp
so at the fly wheel 350 or more

the true corvette is the zo6 all others are pretty slow

well i got 293.7 rwhp stock. if you want to print a copy of it out to show your mustang buddies pm me your email address or post it on this thread and i'll scan it and email it to you. oh and i believe that gm's reason for purposely underating the camaro is so that the corvette owners didn't get mad because people would be able to buy a car with the same engine and horsepower as their's and almost as quick for half the price.

well, I believe that the engines, while very similar are not exactly alike. The vette loses alot more of its HP to its drivetrain than we do.. That helps even us out on the dyno.

I'm pretty sure the only differences between the engines in the C5 and F-bodies lie before the throttle body and in the exhaust.

There was an article a while back when the LS1 first came out in either Hot Rod, Car Craft, or Super Chevy magazine. They dynoed an LS1 out of a brand new Vette and a Camaro for flywheel hp. The Corvette motor came out 3hp higher.

The vette DOES NOT put out as much rwhp as it should due to the suspension (mainly the independent rear). The vette is made to handle the cruves more than a Camaro, so the suspension is not optimized for power, at least that's what I have read.
