LS1 Tune-Up
My car has 48K on the clock (40K when I bought it) I'm thinking I should get a tune-up. I called the dealership where I bought it and the chic said it's good until 100K miles. Should I wait until then to get a tune-up?
I'll just wait until 50K to get the tune-up. I just couldn't let any car go 100K without one, just doesn't seem like it would run good. I plan on getting my coolant flushed too, there's brown crud all over my dipstick. I'm not keeping it in for 5 yrs.
Does the LS1 have a special tune-up procedure or do they just change the spark plugs, set the timing etc.? Should I bring along a set of platinum spark plugs for them to install, or will any spark plugs work?

if the ls1 is anything like the lt1 when it comes to plug changes...ask them to keep the old plugs, and make sure they are all there afterwards.
heard horror stories of guys having a plug change done, then when the later decide to do another they find not all the plugs were changed...mainly due to the hassle gettting to a few of the plugs on lt1's...
just a word of warning...sucks to have 7 or 8 plugs new...and when you have misfire not expecting the plugs to be the problem since "they were just changed"

Okay, here's the procedure.
On an LS1 there are 8 cylinders thus 8 spark plugs, 8 plug wires and 8 ignition coils. There is no distributor so there is no adjusting the timing. The wires can usually be reused as long as you pull on the boot to remove them and don't pull the wires. All 8 can be accessed from above. But on the passenger side removing the plate that holds that side's coil packs gives you a lot more room. Detaching the AIR systems tubing also helps. Removing the coil packs is actually the hardest part of the whole job. Instructions can be found at www.installuniversity.com . After you check to see how much a shop (or god forbid the dealer) is gonna charge you, let me know. You're in Central Fla right? If so I'll come to your driveway, charge you half and show you how to do it. Even if you never do it yourself you'll know enough that a shop can't jerk you araoud.
Let me know.

Man, id do it for you for free. a shop will charge you at like $300 or some INSANE amount of labor. I asked a few shops just to see how much money i save. Its a pain at 1st, but after you do it a few times its easy....
Ya, if I were you I would try to do the plug install on your own, www.installuniversity.com has a good install info on spark plugs (help me out alot), even if you don't have alot of mechanic experience it will pay to do it on your own, when I had some estimates done on changing them they averaged 300 bucks. Alot of people use NGk TR55 (NGK is a brand, you can find them at O'rielys Auto Parts stores), I use the TR6's because I run nitrous. first time (with a friend) it took 3.5 hours. The plugs that come from the factory are defenitly not good up till 100,000 miles expecially if you drive it hard or the previous owner has. Probably won't need wires but everything that petegz28 listed is a good place to start. Transmission and differential stuff will probably have to be done somewhere though..

I change the oil myself, I get the trans. fluid flushed and filled every 15K, that's $115 right there, but the trans. guy is good. The diff. fluid change is like $20 extra at the trans. shop, but I'll have that done at the next trans. service, the guy said I didn't need it changed yet. I'll get my fuel filter changed soon too.
I sent 2002Z28SSConv a PM, if the dealership charges an insane amt. of $$$ for this he said he'd give me a hand.
