LS1 reliability?

I'm looking into buying a 98 or 99 Z28 in the next couple weeks, but they're hard to find. I did find a 98 Z28 (auto) with a little over 90,000 miles on it at a nice price. My question is, how reliable is the LS1 and the 98 Z28 in general at and after the 100,000 mile mark?

thanks

It all depends on how it was taken care of. My car has 60,500 right now and I've had it for the past 20,000 miles and the motor performs great.

Personally, if the car's oil isn't the honey-colored, the coolant isn't bright orange, the trans. fluid isn't red, the tires are bald, etc. I wouldn't get it.

Please don't believe everything the salesman tells you either. If there's something you want to know, this is the best place to ask.

Some common problems to look for:

- leaky t-tops
- blown speakers (will sound fuzzy)
- warped rotors (steering wheel pulsates when brakes applied)
- defective idler pulley (will sound like 100 parakeets under the hood, mostly a '99 problem)
- cold start knock (will tick for a little while on a cold start)

Thanks a lot. I'm probably going to take the car for a test drive this weekend and I'll definitely check for some of those problems.

Thumbs up

I recently bought an (80,000+ miles) '99 m6 and it is an excellent car, no problems at over 90,000 miles now, and I love it far better than my '95 Z28 or either of the Supras I used to drive. Just check it out before you buy it....and SFB767 is right, fluids should be fairly clear and not smell burned etc. Spray some water on top to check for T-top leaks, but don't spray too hard.

Good Luck!

Definately ask about any problems, and be very cautious whether the car has been beaten on since it does have 90k miles. The car will do very well for you. Keep searching around and even try autotrader.com. They have many cars to choose from, because you do not want to regret settling for one car just because they are hard to come by. I found my car on autotrader.com because I did want to settle for cars just locally.
