ls1 questions

from the 98-02 ls1 f-bodies, i've heard a few things... and i need to know if they're true or not.

do the 01-02s have the ls6 intake manifold?

i read somewhere that during one or two of the years, GM had to put ls6 cams in the ls1s cause of a shortage or something. if so, what years, and are there any more specifics on that?

sould a stock 02 z28 A4 be able to beat a M6 350z w/ CAI and exhaust... by about 3 or 4 cars from a dig?

thanks for your help.

Yes, the 01-02's came with LS6 Intake Manifolds.

Don't be afraid to search. Somewhere on this forum, someone lists everything which separates each year from the next. Pretty interesting stuff. I know they changed the lobes in the cams slighty from year to year as well.

Having met someone with a full bolt on 350Z who said they ran a best of 13.5 in the 1/4, I'd say your 350Z vs 02 Z race would all depend on how well the Z28 driver is capable of launching - it being an A4 would raise that %. Just my $.02

Yep. Just as Rick said, the 01s and 02s came with the LS6 manifold. Usually good for a few more ponies over the previous years. About the 350z. If you launch well, you will have minimal problems taking him out. You have the advantage from a dig, and you have the top end advantage as well.

Re: ls1 questions

GM didn't put the LS6 cam in the cars...they put the LS6 block (and intake) in the cars. specifically in 01/02.

now all the cars from those 2 yrs came with teh ls6 intake manifold. HOWEVER not all the cars got the ls6 block. only a small percentage. and there really wasn't any power gain from the upgraded block.

the 350z is what 285hp and i think less than that on torque. the 02 z28 was putting out about 330hp (underrated at 305hp), and close to that on torque. even with the cai and exhaust, the 350z would have nearly 30hp disadvantage and probably 50+lbs of torque disadvantage.

if you can drive...no contest...4 car lenghts sounds about right

Re: ls1 questions

I definitely would not be afraid of a 350Z.

An 02 z28 is making right around 350hp, just like the Vette. The differences between a z28 LS1 and a C5 LS1 are negligible. A m6 LS1 z28 will make 300rwhp, which would put it right near 350 crank hp.

Re: ls1 questions

Agree with the above and would like to add that the cam rumor you heard was probably because of the Corvette cam being installed in some 1998 F-body LS1s because of a shortage. There is almost no difference between the two cams, so no big deal. The LS6 block is nice to have if you can find one, but I wouldn't call it a "deal breaker" if the car in question didn't...
