LS1 Oil Change
LS1 Oil Change
I have a new 2002 firehawk and I just changed my oil for the first time at 2,500 miles. The dealership sold me 5 litres but that wasn't quite enough. I put in another half litre and the dipstick looked full to the line. But my oil change light keeps coming on for a couple of minutes after start, then it goes off. Any advice and yes I have warranty so I guess it goes to the shop. Maybe some of you guys use 6 litres of oil?
Hmm ... don't know about converting quarts to liters, but I'm sure someone will take the time to do that for you. I use a little more than the specs call for, and it puts it right on the full mark.
As for the oil change light, you need to reset it.
Turn the key on, but don't start it. Hold the odometer trip reset for 10 seconds and the light flashes (or something) and you're done.
I hate that you have to reset your trip meter to clear the oil change light. The Oldsmobile is nice .. tap the brakes 3 times in 5 seconds and you reset the light. Oh well.

3.8 litres=1US gallon
4 quarts=1 US gallon
Since it takes 5.5ish quarts for a full oil/filter change, I'd say you'll need more than 6 litres.
rncotton is correct about resetting the oil light. It will always come on until you reset it.

Also another way to reset the change oil light, which is the same way as the Silverado/Sierra Trucks,
Turn they Key to "On", then Press the Gas pedal 5 times and on the Fifth Press hold for 5 seconds, turn key off and Then start the car.. The Change Oil Light should only come on for a brief second as all the rest of the guage lights (i.e. SES Light) and then turn off...
The above mentioned method by stik6shift98 is the official way to reset it, but, a local dealership, told me to try the Silverado method and that works as well one plus to the above method, is you don't have your Trip Odometer Reset...

Thanks for all the great advice. I reset the trip odometer for about 10 seconds and the light went off. Sorry about the litre to quart thing we're metric up here in Canada. I will also put in that other half litre of oil leftover from the change and that dipstick marker is a smart idea too.
Keep cruising in style guys.
