LS1-LS6 Camaro SS knowledge needed please!!

i bought an 01 SS a few months ago and the guy i bought it from me kept saying it had an LS6 in it..... well i knew he was probably full of **** but i liked the car and got it for a decent price....

i did a little research and found out i actually had the ls6 block and ls6 intake manifold.... i figured it wouldn't make much difference but when i run against another ls1 it isnt even a close race and i pull away very easily...

so i'm wondering what do i actually have??, hp wise ??

the only mods are borla exhaust and my ram air lid says "MTI Performance" ... i've never heard of this brand or what its worth...

I did a search but found alot of people contradicting each other..

any info would be greatly appreciated.. THANKS

all 01-02 fbods have the ls6 intake, very few have the ls6 block in them, though. you said the you know that you have an ls6 block- how is it that you know? unless he really did swap his longblock for an ls6, then all you need is an ls6 cam and some ls6 heads!

A lid is a lid is a lid. It's just as good as any other lid.
Depending upon what the other LS1 cars are and have for mods it could be perfectly normal for you to walk them.

i'm not really sure why this is such a popular thing to post. there is a pretty big difference in some of them as far as materials quality, look and fit go.

nope, never tried to imply that. I may be young but i'm not stupid heck i did a v6-lt1 swap on my green camaro so i have a little knowledge about f bodies.... its this new ls1 stuff that i'm not familiar with..

and i cant remember if it had the bullseye or not... all i know is that i went out and looked the other day, and it had what everybody on the board was saying was an ls6 block due to the pres/abs of a bullseye

my ss is at home and i'm at college in my Z so i can't run out and look just yet

well if you do have the LS6 it will be just the block. You could get an LS1 equipped car with the LS6 block from the factory. It still has the same cam, heads, and internals as all the other LS1's. The only difference is the way the oiling runs inside the block. LS6's have the priority main oiling where as the LS1 does not. It's what GM thought it needed to make the motor live better at 450+ crank Hp. That has since been proven inaccurate as there are LS1 blocks living there all day. Now what this does mean is that you can get and LS6 cam and some LS6 heads and have a 405hp beast....basically. you also need your manifolds to flow as well as the corvettes. IMO, get a cam, nice set of heads, headers and laugh at the fact that you have an ls6 block as opposed to an ls1 block....congrats..you don't really get any benifit from it, but you do have it. you're probably still in the neighborhood of 300RWHP. maybe a bit more.

Chris
BTW...I wish I had two 4th gens... I'm depressed now.

yeah yeah yeah.. here I am.. (before my presence is requested formally)

Ok. .FLS6B <-- Factory LS6 Block. .in 2001 10% of the Fbods got this block as the base for thier engine. In 2002 25%.
Your internals are the same as the other 2001/2002 cars its just that the block has larger windows for easier bay to bay transfer of gasses on the down stroke. That adds up to more power.

Lid is a lid is a lid.. we say that because powerwise, there is no difference. Often this phrase is coupled with "find one for the price you want to pay that looks like you want it to look"..

Ill add my usual part.. Trash the aftermarket filter (K&N,Holley, whatever - sell it) and get the stock AC Delco filter. You will get better filtration and more power.

As for me, I have one. I dyno higher than most and am bone stock. I walk most lightly modded LS1's at the track and on the street. I like to think part of it is driver but its the car as well.
I raced my friend at the track many times over and over.
He would tree me by about .2-.4 and get .1 better 60'.. By the 330 mark I had already pulled ahead and continued to walk him the rest of the way. My run 13.1@108 his 13.4@106
His car: 2000 SS with Lid and exhaust.

My car is and will stay bone stock.

A lid is a lid is a lid, its does the same thing as any other lid, the borla catback i'm assuming you've heard of, top of the line most expensive catback of all, the block will not make a difference in performance, like it says, its the ls6 BLOCK, not heads/cam setup, it should be a little darker than a ls1 block.

LOL not sure about most expensive of all... B&B & GMMG (especially if you add a pair of $150 tips) are VERY pricey, corsa isn't exactly going at closeout prices either.

Read read read. He asked about the power. Not about materials, fit, or finish. Just power.
