LS1 life?
LS1 life?
Hi Guys, Just a quick ? , I know in the old days a motor was shot at 100,000 miles. Well is the LS1 any better or can you count on a rebuild around the same milage with these as well. I ask because I know the *** motors are lasting 200k or more. Also I was looking at some Vette,s with 50 to 60 k on them and wondered if they are half shot or not???? Thanks for your comments

I think if you take care of any engine, it'll last. The LS1 has only been out for 6 yrs., so we'll see how well it proves itself in the long run. I'm sure GM designed it to last well over 100K seeing how that's when the first tune-up is recommended.
The LS1 is a pretty stout motor with a ton of power and great fuel efficiency. As far as it being abused, that will be hard to tell. A 15K mile LS1 could have had the crap beat out of it by someone and a 125K LS1 could have been well-maintained. It all depends.
I'm looking a 2001 SS with 41,000 miles on it.
Are LS1's known for breaking 100k easily? I don't want this thing dying on me three months after purchase. My brothers 97 Camaro ended up with a cracked engine block a year or so ago.
Is the new engine reliable? Can you guys give some more stats on your cars mileage, and if you've had any problems with it?
Thanks

My 100K miles are mostly from freeway driving and hard launches at the track. The only things that have broken (due to racing) were my trans and torsen unit. That was over 50K miles ago. I have always religiously changed my oil at 3000 miles with AC-Delco filters and Mobil 1 oil.

Here's what happened to it so far.
Last week I had to have this seal in my tranny replaced because the car was leaking trans. fluid from the bellhousing all over my garage floor. They had to take the entire trans. out of my car and take it apart to replace the seal, $723.
My car has a coolant leak too. I have no idea where it's coming from, but I notice it when I change my oil. Also, DexCool probably won't last 150K miles. When I bought my car, the coolant dipstick had brown residue all over it, so I had my radiator power-flushed about 2 months ago and refilled with new DexCool.
Not too long ago, my engine developed this nice squealing sound, I HOPE it's just a squeaky belt that can be fixed with some WD-40.
About 2 months after I got my car, my driver's speaker became very distorted, it was replaced for $75, then for a week the stereo played great until the passenger door speaker decided to take a crap and do the same thing.
My car has never been to the track, and I change my oil before 2,500 miles, so it's had a pampered life and still had the problems I listed above.
Mine has been great. It has 78,000 on it and I haven't had problems with it at all besides like a window motor (knock on wood). It's been a great car so far. My front speakers went out also. If that happens just go on EBay. I got a brand new PAIR for $40+shipping. They're easy to replace too. I had an LT1, but that was a different story. I liked the BOSE, but I had huge problems with it.
I had to replace all of this on my LT1:
Optispark, Spark plug wires (twice) which is a pain in the butt, water pump, radiator, clutch, the injectors were pressure cleaned, the shocks and struts, computer, fuel filter, a/c fan, EGR valve, MAP sensor, and alternator.
I ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 1 YEAR!!!
I love the LS1. There aren't too many that give people problems.

You can get way beyond 100K miles as long as the engine is maintained properly.
There are, of course, some exceptions to the rule. Like SFB767's car. There are always smoe those in between.
SFB767: Replace your idler pulley and you are all set. Part numbers and prives are listed in the other thread.

I need to post some pics of my car. I just waxed it today and it looks PERFECT right now
. I'll see if I can get my friend's digital camera.
My stock internals on my LT1 lasted 114,000 miles and 95,000+ of those miles were with a supercharger on it. I finally broke #1 & #7 ringland and that was due to my FMU going bad and running lean. Well back to the subject, at 114,000 miles my bores were still within factory NEW specs. So I would say with proper maintanence chevy motors will last a very long time.
