Hey guys.......I have an ongoing debate over at another fourm. I have done a few LT1 engine swaps, and have brought them out from the top. The guys over there don't think that the LS will come out that way. Do any of you have some pics of your swaps going out from the top? If so, do you have any links?


I know they can, but I need some pics. Thank you for your time in advance.

I haven't pulled an LS1 (yet) but as far as I've read, they can go out either way.

Hi i would also want to see pics and a guide on how to remove it both ways. 1 of the worst things that can happen to my car happen last friday all of sudden i went to start the car up sounded like the coils where a bit wet probably from rain storm the car sounded like it had cylinder miss fire go to look under the hood but i noticed a huge trail of oil coming from underneath turns out got a decent size hole in the lower end of the block so the thing i feared most about having a ls1 has happen so i'm gonna have to get a new engine. anyone know of companys that sell decent long blocks or short blocks? also my car is a 98z with around 90k i guess i never beat on it take great care of it i am surprised it happened. but oh well atleast if i get new engine it will have 0miles. Thanks i hope someone can help.

 

I just happened to see a ls1 being removed from the bottom in a Camaro

on a T.V. show last weekend.(Maybe Horsepower TV)They lifted the

car to clear the engine and tranny.they were on a dolly,Sounded like

that was the preferred way for them.

No pictures or anything, but I've done it several times. It's pretty much the same as dropping an LT1, disconnect all the coolant lines, wiring harness and AC crap, jack it up, put jackstands under the body, put a jack under the k-member and leave the trans x-member in place but take off the trans mount. Loosen the 6 big bolts that hold the k-member to the rest of the car, and slowly let her down. A friend and I can do it in a little over an hour, we have it down to an art form.

 

I forgot to mention you have to take the steering knuckle off, and disconnect the brake lines and abs sensors from the calipers too. You also have to take the bolts for the struts out, the 2 15mm bolts and the 2 star bolts on each side.

 

I know it can be taken out from the bottom. I have done a few lt1's from the top, and the bottom both. I was just trying to prove they (LS1's) CAN be taken out from the top. Thanks for your help tho. Mike

 

Whoops! I misread your post and thought you meant out the bottom. I've taken them out the top too, but its alot easier the other way. You need to pull the radiator and ac condenser, and remove everything from the front of the engine. take the wiring harness off, and also the intake manifold. Drain the transmission, and take the trans x-member off. The car will HAVE to be raised to do this, which makes lifting the engine difficult. Basically by lifting the front of the engine and lowering the transmission, it will allow you to get at the proper angle. However, this is WAY more dangerous, it involves more people with helping hands, and people will have to be under it to guide it out. It can be done, but its a major pain in the *** and I will NEVER do it that way again!
