It's not normal, many of us have engines that use little oil. GM looked into it and found one factor in high oil usage on M6 Corvettes was driving at higher rpms at light load. Apparantly it allows the rings to float. GM recommended loading the engine to prevent this. They went with higher tension rings in later engines.

I put it in higher gears as quickly as I can when just cruising. I also stay away from M1 30 weight synthetics. They are on the thin end of the 30 weight scale and get thinner in use. Currently using M1 5-40 T&SUV. Just checked the level @ 1,000 miles on the change, no noticeable drop in level.

If the 2 suggestions above don't help, might want to do a compression check.

Re: LS1 Burning oil???

I posted about this in the other thread that was about problems with '98 Z28's or something. I go through a quart and a half or two between oil changes (every 3K). GM has a TSB (kind of like a recall) about this. The General's solution is to either drive less aggressively or replace the oil sealing rings on all the pistons. Some people got the rings done under warranty but if you're out of warranty then, uh, keep the rpm's down.

There is a different problem with the M6 Corvettes that involves the PCV valley cover or something. I had this TSB printed up before but I can't find it. I'll print it again at work today if I can remember.

Re: LS1 Burning oil???

Like Teke said check the simple things first.

Change the pvc valve. When they go bad they suck the oil right out of the pan by the quarts full.

Re: LS1 Burning oil???

I had one oil change where I had what seemed to be exceptionally high oil consumption (the low loil light came on at about 2500 miles into the change)
It was when the car had about 10,000 miles on it. Since then i have always tossed in an extra half a quart of synth into my car upon changes and have never had an issue. In fact, i measured the amount coming out, and 6+ goes in, 5+ comes out 3000 hard miles later. I think my one change I must have been math-tarded and missed a quart. I would monitor future changes. Of course if the engine is noticibly burning oil, then its a different case.

Re: LS1 Burning oil???

If it makes you guys feel any better, Mercedes Benz spec for oil consumption is a max of 1 qt per 1000 miles.
