2004 GTO engine is an LS1. Only the very late build 2005 and later LSx engines have the different crank reluctor wheel.

If the engine is still in the car, look at the cylinder head casting number. Its located just below the valve cover rail at the front of the passenger head, near the oil filler. 241 is an LS1 head, and 799 (rare) or more likely 243 would be an LS2.

The rear of the block will have either a 5.7 (LS1), or 6.0 (LS2) cast into it.

The LS1 will have the camshaft position sensor at the rear of the block next to the oil pressure sending unit. The LS2 will have the cam sensor in the timing cover.

Finally, the GTO had the engine type displayed on the throttle body. LS1 throttle body is cable driven. ALL LS2 throttle bodies are electronic.

2004 GTO got the LS1, 2005 and 2006 GTO got the LS2.

Yes. The TB uses a motor and the computer to tell it how far to open it instead of a cable like the F-body LS1s, however, that's both on the LS1 and LS2 GTO cars, so seeing a motorized TB doesn't guarantee that it's an LS2.

Ummm... I'm pretty certain that the LS1 GTO uses a cable throttle body. The only LS1 to receive an electronic throttle body was the Corvette.

And to SPEEDWAYZ26: You say it has a 90mm cable throttle body?? You may want to double check that. GM never made a 90mm cable throttle body. All 90mm TBs are electronic. There are however, aftermarket 90mm cable throttle bodies available.

I think putting an electronic-throttle LS2 in a '99 Camaro would be more trouble than it's worth.

Are you replacing a blown engine, or just looking to upgrade to something more powerful?

location of knock sensors.....

side of block = ls2

under intake = ls1

easiest way to determine the difference. even let's you weed out the hard to find ls2 iron blocks from the lq4's.

ALL LS2s are aluminum. Perhaps you mean LQ9?

the 04's a a weird set up as it does have a cable but its connected to a motor off to the side in the engine bay and is controlled by the computer. it is not connect directly to the throttle pedal.
