If the engine is still in the car, look at the cylinder head casting number. Its located just below the valve cover rail at the front of the passenger head, near the oil filler. 241 is an LS1 head, and 799 (rare) or more likely 243 would be an LS2.
The rear of the block will have either a 5.7 (LS1), or 6.0 (LS2) cast into it.
The LS1 will have the camshaft position sensor at the rear of the block next to the oil pressure sending unit. The LS2 will have the cam sensor in the timing cover.
Finally, the GTO had the engine type displayed on the throttle body. LS1 throttle body is cable driven. ALL LS2 throttle bodies are electronic.
2004 GTO got the LS1, 2005 and 2006 GTO got the LS2.

Yes. The TB uses a motor and the computer to tell it how far to open it instead of a cable like the F-body LS1s, however, that's both on the LS1 and LS2 GTO cars, so seeing a motorized TB doesn't guarantee that it's an LS2.
And to SPEEDWAYZ26: You say it has a 90mm cable throttle body?? You may want to double check that. GM never made a 90mm cable throttle body. All 90mm TBs are electronic. There are however, aftermarket 90mm cable throttle bodies available.
the 04's a a weird set up as it does have a cable but its connected to a motor off to the side in the engine bay and is controlled by the computer. it is not connect directly to the throttle pedal.
