Loud thump when I accelerate hard?

I have a '98 SS A4, and recently when I accelerate pretty hard I can hear and feel a loud thump from the rear of my car. It only lasts for a second and then stops, I kind of feels like I ran over something. It only does it when I first start to go and it gets more noticable the harder that I accelerate. Once I get up to 40 mph+ if I floor the peddle it feels fine, its only for a brief second when I first start to take off. There is nothing loose it my trunk and my tires and wheels are all fine. Does anyone have a clue what could be causing this to happen. Please help.

More than likely, it's either a torque arm mount or tranny mount that's broken. Easy fixes.

sounds like a broken tranny mount! get an ES poly tranny mount and be done with it for good!

its probly your kid hitting the rear window. You should really tell him to wear a seat belt. JK, I agree its prolly ur tranny mount, after I put new one in it went away, although the thump wasnt really there, i could just hear it sometimes.

I have a m6.......Did the same thing but only when I downshifted hard. Put a poly transmission mount in and torque arm mount....sound is gone and the car drives like new again.......I got mine from jegs..........they have the cheapest prices.......I just bought mine so they should still be the lowest
