Long Tubes Legal?

Hey, I will be getting a Z28 in a few months, and was wondering if Long Tubes are legal? I heard that you can't pass emissions with them, and you can't have them on if a cop stops you. Is there any truth to this? Thanks, Ryan

Ya, I hope thats not true, but I guess it could be I am going from a Mustang to a Camaro because I have a 1998 GT with around 103k miles on it, and some people told me to spend 1.5k and get a 99+ GT motor, but I still couldn't even hang with a stock LS1, so I looked into crate motors, but for less than a crate motor would be I could sell my car, and save up and buy a LS1 Z28, so I decided to do that so I get the best of both worlds, a new model car, and a MUCH faster car (around 215 RWHP vs. around 300 RWHP)

hey whats up a fellow X-mustang owner. From what I understand the reason that long tubes are illegal is that they move the cat from its stock location. Now what i'm wondering is if you buy a Y pipe that has cats on it and it still runs clean would the tech doing smog actually know where the stock position of the cats are?

That's correct.

I have no doubt that you could pass emissions with them if you're running cats. You just wouldn't pass the visual inspection part...that is, if the inspector knows where the stock cat(s) location is.

I don't know how bad the police are out in California but I'd been pulled over numerous times (6-7) in my '96 w/ LTs and ORY and never once did the cop look under my car or ask me any questions about my exhaust. However, if he would have...I probably would've been in deep s**t (from a money standpoint). I believe the fine for no cats is about $2500-5000.

96SFLZ how do you like your long tubes? How hard were they to put in?

I like 'em a lot. Install was actually very easy, a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. It probably took us about 4 maybe 5 hours total.

LTs are definitely the way to go if you don't have to worry about emissions.

Jay, I live in Boynton now but yeah, the PBS's are pretty cool. I'm not really worried about any of the local PDs, just the Troopers...even though I've had pretty good luck with them so far [knock on wood].

It totally depends on your state laws. When I lived in CA the cats has to be in the same locations and O2's were a must. Here in AZ now all I have to do is pass the computer test, it's easy with 02 sims and programming! On my brother's Z28 they didn't even pop the hood!

I thought TX was pretty easy on smog like AZ, there are many bad *** F-bodies in TX so I think you'd be fine. Check with some local guys/shops!
