Question Life expectancy

I have a 98 Z28 with the expansion chip. I have 101,000 miles on it and I'm wondering what the life expectancy (how many miles before I need to sell or replace engine) is for a Z28 with no real mods. I know it depends on how I care for it, trust me it's well taken care of. Anyone know?

thats alot of miles for a 98...do you beat on the car, did the previous owners beat on it..that makes a huge diffrence especially with in the first 10k miles
i dont think the chip would make you loose much realiability

OMG, 75,000 miles in 11 months? As long as you take care of it it should keep going and going. most problems occur from a lack of use and maintainence. Have you had any probelms so far?

May is almost two years ago, not just months....

If you change oil often the engine should last almost forever.... I would say 200000 miles is possible, then take it apart....

How long do engines last ??? Just to give you an idea : years ago I put almost 100000 miles on a Honda CRX and sold it with 120000 miles on the original engine. I ported the heads right after I bought it and that was the only time that any work to the engine was done. I also had a Miata and bought a old pos for the winter, that car had 250000 miles on it and it was still ok......Use good oil, change it often, give the engine time to warm up and it will last.....

i remember sometime back hearing about a corvette owner putting 250,000 on his (it was a ls1........thus the revalence to the post )...........im sure you will be ok with regular care and maintanence.............but dont baby it too much.......you need to open it out sometimes......(sometimes is a very liberal term for some ==== everytime they drive it .......i don blame yall, its fun i know)................i dont think you will have any problems (well any big problems)....for a while..........minor things i would think will need to be replaced (fuel pump, sensors, and similar items).........good luck

Scott

P.S. -- A friend of mine has a 91 rs camaro with over 250k miles on it..........and it still runs strong (well as strong as the 305 can run )............and he has only had to replace 9 things.....only 9!!!!.........(things like fuel pump and sensors and other miscelaneous items)...................................just shows ya...if you take care of anything, it will last long..............oh yeah! he has been using the same oil in it since he bought it, the same gas since he bought it, and he regulary uses techron additive in the gas to clean out the engine (fuel injectors, carburator, and a couple of things)

who says american cars dont last as long as foreign cars

not to mention my lug nuts require more torque than their cars make

GM may be really crappy at a few things (standardized quality control and automotive interior design immediately spring to mind), but one thing they absolutely RULE at is engine design. IMHO, there is no better company than GM when it comes to putting together a high-performance, mass-produced, reliable V8 engine.

As I told another poster in another forum, the LS1 engine is a warhorse, and if you take care of it as you say you are, the motor should last for hundreds of thousands of miles before needing a rebuild. Thus far, I haven't seen any evidence that the LS1 cars have specific design flaws, other than small, easily fixed things (like terrible stock brake rotors).

I've never heard of an "expansion chip". I'm assuming that you didn't install it yourself, and that a previous owner put it on there? As far as I know, you can't buy any "performance chips" for Camaros after the '93 model year. I think you CAN reprogram the ECU with a Hypertech, but that's about it. Do you have any more info you can provide about this "expansion chip" so we can find out what it is, or if it even exists?

Whoops, sorry about that, I didn't even notice. Like I said, never heard of an "expansion chip". Maybe the original poster can enlighten us.

Thumbs up

I'll pass that mark in roughly 3 months. My 2001 has well over 83K on it (18 months old). Very reliable, more so than my 1995 Nissan truck I had (only had a fuel tank wire sensor failure through the 140K miles I owned it). As said previously, proper maintaince and any car will last a long time.
