LID or K&N Setup

I have a 02 SS and wanted to upgrade the air box. Just curious which is better the SLP Lid or the K&N Intake. Is it worth spending the money on the K&N or will I get the same results from the lid??

Basically, a lid is a lid, you will not see any noticeable difference between one lid or the another, they all perform the same.

Re: LID or K&N Setup

If you do a search on this, you'll come up with some pretty good info. For us (WS6) guys, I think a lot of us (including myself) are content with a lid and filter. I think the SS owners as well as the Z28 and T/A owners prefer an open cold-air intake like the K&N FIPK. The SS hood isn't quite as functional as the WS6 one so you would probably prefer the K&N FIPK setup. Hope this helps.

Re: LID or K&N Setup

The K&N claims 4 more hp than what you would see from a lid. That's around $200 more for 4hp, which i really don't consider worth it.

If you just got a lid though, you have the ability to get an underbox CAI or an SSRA ram air setup, which can make that $200 go much farther.

A third option is the Volant CAI that replaces the lid assembly. These give comperable gains to the K&N setup, maybe a little more, but then again you won't have the ability to get a ram air setup in the future.

Price wise:
volant= $298
K&N= $340
Lid=$100

all of these give or take, not exact figures, but very close.

Just do a Lid and a K&N Filter.Maybe later,add a SLP Cold Ram Air or Fast toys ram air...

Do they make Smooth Bellows and Performance MAF's for V6's?

Not exactly true... GMHTP did a comparison with lids, and although they all offered gains, they were NOT equal in all areas. Some pulled up to 6 horse more than others, plus the difference in the fastest lid's time vs. the slowest was .15 sec.

I will Gladly admit, the difference could have been the dyno, or the track, etc (I won't try to fight that fight). The MAIN take away I got was some lids were rated noticably better in build quality, fit, and finish. That is harder to argue With a difference in price in the lids tested ranging from $89 to $149, a lid isn't a lid...

Re: LID or K&N Setup

I'll stick with my MTI clear lid cuz it looks cool.

Were all the lid tests performed on the same car? I would like to see a few cars with each lid and take a mathematical average.

i remember reading an article in some magazine on lids. they were all performed on the same ls1 car. i also remember slp and texas speed proving to show the best gains.
