Left the Cooling fans on .. Drained the battery
Hey guys,
Just got back from an unpleasant drive after getting my car jumped ... I had left my cooling fans on (SLP fan switch mod) and drained my battery. When I first started it .. the car was revving by itself from 1500-2500 rpm's .. Let it do that for a couple minutes .. didn't see any sign of change, so I took it for a 45 minute drive as the AAA towtruck guy said to let it run for a good 30 minutes. It would idle between 1500-2000 rpmss and only when I was stopped .. If I was moving in neutral or with the clutch disengaged, the rpm's would stick at 3000 until I came to a complete stop .. Any time I wanted to put it in gear and go it would try to keep the rpm's at 3000 .. So I'd creep up to 3000 in first, shift to 2nd, .. went to 3rd only a couple times. I was afraid to take in on the freeway. Now I've got it parked back at school. When I got back, I shut it off, then restarted .. Idled normal ~1000 rpm's. I'm gonna let it sit for a while .. let the clutch cool down after that work .. and drive at again later tonight?
Anyone know what the hell happened? I would think the computer would need to "relearn"/"reteach" (pick your favorite verb) itself .. but wtf .. talk about a slow learner.
Thanks,
Sean

I've did that 3 times in my Z and it idled at 3K RPM's too. Just shut it off and let it sit for a min. and re-start it and everything goes back to normal.
I finally installed LED's to the fan switch so that if the fans are on, I have bright red LED's in my vents to remind me they're on.

the only way i can see making the fans shut off when the car is turned off is to find a 12v power source that is only hot when the ignition is on.
say maybe the radio?
the led idea is what i'm doing, i'm going to make a plate for the switch and have an led for Hi and one for Low...and i'm going to have it placed where the cig lighter is

I have LEDs mounted on either side of my slp fan switch. Don't have a link but here's how I did mine. Radio Shack part #276-085 is the green LED, red is one number different. Just pigtail the red wires from both LEDs to a 12V source; splice black wire from green LED to red wire on switch; splice black wire from red LED to white wire on switch.
The cool thing is you can see when the fans are running even if you're not using the switch. When the fans come on "low" the green light illuminates, "high" and they both glow.

"Its not like fans are qiet, how could you not hear them when you get out of the car?"
actually, when on low you really can't hear them.
i've actually been reminded to turn them off from the hot air hitting your feet as you step out of the car more than from the sound.
as for install, you should just be able to splice the LED inline with the wire that goes hot for each setting. just use a tester and see which wire is hot when the switch is in the OFF position, Hi position, and Low position....and slice away

Thanks for the wiring instructions guys .. I'll get right on that.
hey man i like where you mounted your switch. almost same place as mine, but i never use, and don't plan to use the cig lighter so i just installed it through that hole.
what's funny is that i have the same MBA black engraved shift **** and short stick...lol
take care and post pics of the leds

ty, hehehe ya i saw you pic .. forgot to mention that .. bad *** **** .. ya i didn't go with the cigarette lighter hole because i was afraid of ripping the thing out and cracking the plastic .. so i used a thick drill bit to drill a hole and kinda spiral out for a larger hole.
My battery died some time back. The result after I got a jump start was an eratic idle very simular to what you described. I posted the problem and resolved it by replacing the battery (it was dead, dead, dead). The thread will make some interesting reading for those who have this problem.
