Angry Know it all mechanic

I just talked to a mechanic yesterday. I told him I was going to install a 3200 stall torqe converter on my car. He said that I would have to get a cam too because my stock cam will not work. He said I would burn up my transmission. Is this true??? He also said my 3.73 gears are making me lose torque. He said I should go back down to 2.73's I would be faster. Somebody please help.

Well I drive a M6 so I am by NO means a A4 expert.. but I know a lot of people that are running converters with stock internals. And the 3.73 gears will give you a better hole shot as long as you are getting traction so I would not worry with that either. Basically just ignore what the guy said.. sounds like he is trying to make you do stuff to your car that you dont need to so he gets more money!

Just another of the many mechanics trying to confuse customers so they can get more money out of them. A convertor will not kill your tranny and you'll be fine with 3:73 gears. 2:73 gears are more favorable for highway conditions as 3:73 gears (in conjunction with good rubber and a convertor) will assist in your 60' time.

Lay off the mechanic ripping, man. You are right on everything else though.

To answer your questions..

3.73 is fine..

Id actually go 2800 or 3000 on the convertor since you are running stock internals..

and run synthetic fluid with a tranny cooler and your tranny will be fine.

Actually, you should stay away from synthetic transmission fluid in the 4L60E. Although I am a big fan of synthetics in motors, changing the viscosity and composition of fluid in an automatic transmission is not a good idea. There have been many, many people who have had premature clutch failures and line pressure problems running synthetic in the 4L60E. Stick with a good, quality ATF.

As for what the mechanic said, you are correct, that mechanic either didn't know what he was talking about, or was trying to get you to spend money on something you don't need.

I had a 3000 stall Midwest convertor in my car for a while with stock engine internals with no problems. It responded great. Now that I have a non stock engine, I wish I would have gone bigger!

A couple of people said the same thing when I mentioned going with a 3500 stall. They were wrong. 3.73s will not only help you off the line (assuming traction is there) but will also make the 3200 stall more easy to live with. Transmission cooler is a must. Stick with the proper regular transmission fluid, I have heard of issues with synthics (sp?) causing the transmission to slip.

Thumbs down

I would NOT let any mechanic with that analogy work on my vehicle, what he said does not make ANY sense to me at all.

I have 3.73's in my A4 right now, and with the stock coverter, I can tell you first hand, that the car is more throttle responsive from anywhere in the RPM range.

By your "sig" I am assuming you are a woman, probably getting a nother line of crap from a macho f@gg*t.
