Question K&N Questions

I'm thinking about getting a K&N filter, and have a few questions.

- Is there a noticeable difference in accleration?
- How much is the HP/TQ gain, if any?
- How long does the filter last?
- Does it keep residue out as well as a paper filter?
- What kind of maintenance needs to be done for this filter?
- If I choose to get a lid/intake, can I still use the filter?
- What size does the LS1 take?
- Is it worth the money?

Thanks.

Here you go:

- No.
- Hardly any. Some drag racers say, though, that paper filter flows better, so go figure...
- K&N guarantees it for million miles, so I guess it'll last a long time. As long as you take care of it.
- Maybe even better?
- I think K&N recommends cleaning and oiling it every 40-50K miles. I do it every 10K, though...
- Yes.
- Don't remember the size or part number off the top of my head, but do some searches with some of the vendors on this sie and I'm sure you'll find it.
- Depends. To me it was since I got a used one very cheap and was able to transfer it from my Firebird directly to the Z.

Glad to be of help!

Re: K&N Questions

- Is there a noticeable difference in accleration?
Nope
- How much is the HP/TQ gain, if any?
Probably 0
- How long does the filter last?
It's got a million mile warranty
- Does it keep residue out as well as a paper filter?
It seems like it, so IMO yes
- What kind of maintenance needs to be done for this filter?
Just buy the cleaning kit and clean it whenever it gets alittle too dirty, I don't know how long that would be w/o the FRA. I clean mine about every 5k miles or so
- If I choose to get a lid/intake, can I still use the filter?
Yep
- What size does the LS1 take?
Not sure about the size but I believe the part number is 33-2118
- Is it worth the money?
That's up to you, I got 20% off my lid/filter so I just decided to go ahead and get one

I'm with the guys above. I've got it. I don't claim to make more power because of it. I never "felt" a difference. I don't "believe" there's a difference ('til I see a dyno paper proving otherwise). It does fit with a different lid. It's good because it'll last the life of the car if you clean it periodically. Worth it?? Long term "yes", short term "probably not".

Cool

It sounds like the K&N isn't worth it.

Thanks for the info. guys.

The advantage of a K&N filter is the fact that you dont have to run to the store and buy a replacement everytime yours gets dirty. All you have to do is clean and oil it and your all set. There is no HP increase, unless your replacing a dirty filter with a clean K&N filter. Even then its minimal and your only going to see 2-3 hp, which wont register on the butt dyno.

Not exactly.

You will save the price of the filter in just a couple of years, depending on the amount of miles you drive and whether you think air filter is important or not.

Sometimes you can see pretty wild-looking filters since many people don't give it a second thought...

i dont know about a noticable hp gain on the v8's but when i put it on my 3.8l v6 i could tell a difference. ive been told it will make a 5-10 hp gain (id like to see dyno results thogh) but with acceleration, i could tell a slight difference. but overall i think its a good buy, seeing that you will never need to replace it.

I agree with what was said above and saw you mention about possibly getting a lid. Most websites offer a deal where you can get a lid and filter for a little bit cheaper then it would be to buy them seperately, of course they did this after I put filters and lids on both the Camaros.

I dont feel that aftermarket filters are worth the $..

Sure you can get one for about $30-$50 but I would rather run a new filter more often.

Just my personal preference.. Even though you only lose 3 rwhp with an aftermarket filter (proven on my reveiws) I think that those 3 are what I would rather keep..

As for lids.. the 8rwhp I found you can get with them is not worth the loss in MPG.. I would only put it on at the track if I were to use mine.. I much rather prefer getting 27+mpg as opposed to 24 with a lid.
3 miles per gallon.. on a 16.8 gallon tank.. of which I normally use 14.2 is 42.6 miles lost.. Thats roughly 2 gallons.. per tank..
every 7 tanks full, thats 1 tank full of gas.. So to me, it makes more sense to stay stock.. at least for now..

I almost forgot.. the sound.. at first it wasnt as noticeable.. then I took the lid on a road trip.. AUGH! too much engine noise..

I have to add that while it may be a "hassel" to run to the store to get an air filter (and where did you get the oil for an oil change?)...

I can change stock air filters faster than anyone on this planet can "recharge" a K&N filter.. How is that possible? The instructions state that the filter must DRY... that takes time..

The install of a new filter can be done in under 2 min.. doesnt seem unreasonable to me.. Plus I would rather run a new filter more often than run a "cleaned" filter...

Get a Holley not the K&N I just remembered the K&N makes you put on a gasket and the holley doesn't need one.

i see this all to often, people disputing over whether the k&n is better than paper filters. most people say that paper outflows the k&n but they are wrong, click here and here is a test of different filters on a tunercar. even though the k&n does outflow paper filters you most likely wont feel 4hp at best that you'll get over a new paper filter but me personally i like nowing that i have that meesly couple of hp.
