Just ignore the SES light????

Before I could get the secondary air check valve off and replaced on my 98 Z28 A4 the light went off for the second time. What I mean is it came on about a month ago(1800 miles) and after driving a tank of gas out of it it went off. SO I figured it was bad gas. Then I had the tranny flushed/filled/filter service at GM and the SES light came on for the TECH. He read the code P1416 Secondary Air Check. Thanks to this board I found where this was and was going to replace the VALVE when my tech ability prevented me from even loosening this valve. Yea, I am an idiot when it comes to anything more then changing the oil. ANYWAY, while I was waiting to get this part and the old one off the SES light went out again............PLEASE - any and all ideas, do I let it go or try to replace this valve????? And why can't I budge this air check valve if I should replace this? It is only a $ 10 part.

Service Engine Soon

so this is not unusual for the SES light? From all i heard it seems to ALWAYS indicate emissions problems ONLY., is that a good assumption of the SES? furthermore, it is not usually serious or causes any more damage from an SES error...?

Just because it went off doesn't mean the check air valve isn't bad... like you said, it is only a $10 part. It is probably best to change it out-the computer stores the info, and runs the engine accordingly, weather the light is on or off.

This is not true. The light stays on as long as there is a problem. if the light is out there is no problem. if the light goes on for whatever reason and you fix it it will still stay on for about another 100 miles or so just to make sure the problem is fixed. so for the time the valve is working. if it comes on again and goes out than it would indicate it is an intrmetiate problem. than I would change it. Now that the light is out have the computer check it it will come back with no problems meaning it did not store the code it is only stored as long as the light stays on. once the light goes out it is erased...

by the way did you know if you leave your gas cap off and drive the car the light will come on... if you dont think so check your manual..... The LT1 might not be like this but this is how the LS1 computers work.

-- 2000TA -- yes....

I did read that in the manual and that was when it came on first so back then I checked the cap and did all that was recomended and it went away after 100 or so miles....BUT like I said the code clearly showed ::
P1416 Secondary Air Control
after the second time and it went out again. Well, anybody know why I can loosen and get the original Air Check Valve off? The more power I use it feels like the damn pipe it sits on will snap off...

YEA, can't loosen it...

can't loosen, so you think there is something wrong if it doesn't just come right off with a little pressure from a wrench?

Ok well i never tried to get one off. But you might want to make sure it is not Backwards Treaded. I remember some of the older jeeps were like that with the belt pully. I dont know why they did this but it could be the same thing with that part. just a thought
