Just Bought a 2001 Z28

Hello All,

I am new to the forum and just recently purchased a 2001 Z28 with T-Tops fully loaded.. I just wanted to post a general message to ask for any heads up's or suggestions you would like to offer. The car has a bit of high mileage at 83k, but seems to be well taken care of.

The only problems I have is that it seems all the speakers are blown, and the Monsoon radio has a button missing on it. These I can easily take care of in due time. I am more interested in general engine and drive train issues that may pop up.

I will be browsing through the past posts in the next few days, as well I plan on buying a Haynes manual to read through. But I wanted to throw this message out anyhow to at least introduce myself to the group.

Cheers,
Greg

Hey Greg congrats on the purchase my friend! Automatic/Manual? Was it privately owned or a fleet vehicle? That is high, highway miles I'm sure, but nonetheless still a beast and congrats!

Did it come with any service history to tell you what it's been through? You can call Chevy's Customer Service and they should be able to tell you the warranty information and dealership sold at. Or if you know someone at a Chevy dealer they should be able to print any dealer serviced work out for it. I believe any car can run forever if serviced right the first time.

Hey, thanks for the reply...

It is an automatic. Thankfully as I spend a lot of time driving and am too old to deal with shifting while trying to eat lunch, read the paper, and shave.. j/k....

Unfortunately no service papers came with the car. I have looked it over and it has not been in any wrecks, nor does the car look to be tampered with. No aftermarket parts have been installed. No dings, scratches, leaks, mods, or other things that would point to a kid owning it and ragging it out.. Oil seems clean, as does tranny fluid.

Thanks again!!

well then, what is your purpose with the vehicle?

are you wanting a quick daily driver? If so you are done.. enjoy the car and read about which tires to install when needed (i just did a post about it)..

Are you wanting a drag car that is your daily driver? if so, the auto is a great choice.. I would suggest getting suspension setup for the track as that will help your auto launch because power is a plenty!

Are you wanting to perhaps do some SCCA driving? Again head straight for the suspension and tires. hehe

Many people here will tell you to start modding it and whatnot. .I personally dont see any point in modding a car that hasnt been fully played with.. I have gone 13.1@108 and know that 12's are possible. I know my cars weight full. I know that one more trip to the track with decent conditions will net me my 12's.. bone stock.. well I do have aftermarket replacement tires. but they are rated similar to the GSC and they are street tires.. Not drags or auto X tires.

I do suggest that if you are wanting to jump on the modding bandwagon, get some dyno and track runs in first to get an idea of what is going on.. dyno is best for seeing your power and torque curves constitantly.. the track.. well its not as consistant so until you cannot get it any faster a mod makes no sense to ME..

Best mod any car could ever get is a better driver..

How ironic... In the For Sale forum, someone is selling a monsoon radio from a 2001 camaro.

Hope you enjoy your new car!

Nah, I have had my day of doing mods. This car was built to be fast pretty well by Chevrolet. I've found that the more ya mod, the more potential problems you have. I dont plan to do any racing, drag nor scca. I have just always admired the look, power, and speed of the Camaro. That was really my sole reason for the purchase.

I enjoy being able to hammer the pedal and pass just about anything I need, but hitting a 10 second quarter just isn't a concern for me. More than anything else I want to take good care of this car, and keep it in pristine shape.

How refreshing to hear you say that. I too am a new owner of beautiful A4 98 SS. I am in your shoes about keeping it prestine and not 1/4ing the car to death, however, you may want to consider a few basic mods like the air lid. I just put one on with a smooth bellow (for cosmedics) and have noticed the car just plain runs better and I hear it's good for gas milage too? For $75 I think it's worth it. Good luck with the car and remember these things weren't built to be babied.

A friend of mine had a 94 Z28. He ragged on that car all the time. Every stop he came to he had to light the tires. Every ricer he pulled next to he had to dust. Well, he ended up blowing the engine up. I am a bit apprehensive to hammer it al the time due to that. I dont know what and how often these cars can handle it. He did change the oil regularly, and kept the car maintained well. But I guess he just played to much. Same guy has 3 DUI's though also. Still hasn't grown up at the age of 29...

Needless to say he ended up hitting a BMW one night while driving a bit toxed. Nothing to bad, but the car has now sat for 4 years as he doesnt have the money to fix it.. Again.....

I have owned many, around 25, cars in my life. Most have been 3 or 400 hundred dollar **** boxes.. Only in the past 5 years have I made the money to have decent cars. I used to build show cars, but always for other people.. It is nice to have a head turner myself for a change...

Congrats on the car. LS1s can last forever properly maintained. Good luck with her.
