just bought an 02 z28! fuel question???

Does anyone here fill their car up with E-10 89 octante?

i bought my camaro in texas and drove it up to nebraska. i filled it up with 89 octane and the check engine light came on although the car ran fine. on my next fillup i put in 89 again but i added octane booster and the check engine light went off. then on my next fillup i only did half a tank so i tried 87 octane with the octane booster and after a while the check engine light came on again.

do these motors really need the high octane fuel? will 89 octane fuel by itself be fine or does it really need 91? or will 89 plus the octane boost work?

and is octane boose ok for the motor?

You will get different responses on this board, from my personal experience my car sounds like rattleling cans when i use 89, from then on i immediately started using 93 and never had a problem since. The check engine light is probably coming on because of the knock sensor, stop using the octane booster and fill up with premium to see if that solves the problem. If i'm not mistaken it's about a 20hp loss when you use regular.

Ok, so on your next fill up don't use any octane booster and try 91-93 octane fuel instead. Too much octane booster will eventually damage your O2 sensors.

In the owners manual it states that premium gasoline is needed. By going with the mid or lower grade, you are probably only saving a few bucks, which is what a bottle of octane booster costs....

Most "shelf" octane boosters boost the octane from lets say 89 octane fuel so about 89.4 octane. Its a gimmick if you ask me. And they do damage O2 sensors very quickly

and yes i agree with this guy. plus the fact the money you save will be used in buying the octane booster, and not worth the stress you get by seeing a check engine light... maybe it won't hurt the engine to run low octane, but it can't be GOOD for it

and if that light stays on because of you running the low octane you may accidentally disregard something that is seriously wrong with the engine

The stock LS1 motor is around 10.3:1.

If you don't use 93, you're either a moron or a cheap SOB.

Agreed, and that octane boost is CRAP. FWIR it only raises the octane level in a full tank a few tenths anyhow. Not to mention the possible o2 sensor problems that people talk about. I haven't seen it myself, but I don't use the stuff.

Stick with Shell, Amoco, or Sunoco Premium. Shouldn't need the 94 at Sunoco (if they even still sell it - no Sunoco's around here anymore ).

I love when people's posts answer their original question.

I simply use what my engine asks for. When I first put the LS1 engine in I tried 89 Octane and it ran fine and registered NO spark knock when I checked the knock count history. I also ran 89 in the LT1 I took out with no problems. I did however have a 96 Z28 that required 91+ or it would spark knock. Running better gas than your motor requires obviously won't hurt anything, but it won't gain you anything and it's a waste of money.

I am cheap, but only a moron spends more than he has to for the same outcome.
