Introduction (and 2.73s)

Hey all,

Wanted to drop in and say hi. I'll probably be posting here now and then.

I've been on the board for a couple of years, but mostly posted in the V6 section and the Lounge. I just traded in my supercharged 2000 Camaro V6 (sans-supercharger ) for a 1998 Z28. I'm loving the new ride.

My question is, is it worth it to swap out the stock 2.73s my car has for 3.23s or 3.42s? What should I expect ET wise with the 2.73s as compared to the 3.42s?

Worth it? Oh yeah! I'm soon going to be installing 3.73's in my beast, although you will still notice a huge difference with 3.42's even. IMO, if you're spending the time/money to swap gears, I wouldn't stop at 3.23's, even though they are lower, 'cause for little difference 3.42's would make toward your gas mileage, you might as well go all out!

I can't tell you exact 1/4 mile improvements, but IMO you should pick up a couple tenths of a second at least.

if your looking for low cost you could keep an eye out for an M6 guy moving to 4.10s and pickup a set of 3.42s cheap.

I think three tenths going from 2.73s to 3.73s is normal. Maybe .4. Usually, most folks pick up around two or three with 3.42s. On the stock gears, I think they are actually relatively even, maybe the 3.23s a tenth quicker.

The thing about going to a lower gear is that the car will pull a lot harder. You'll also lose some gas mileage, though. I'd just go with a converter.

a convertor and 3.42s/3.73s i'd say you're probably looking at cutting .8-.9 off your times for an average driver. But note that a convertor will make the car significantly harder to launch on street tires.

Just as much as the LS1 M6 loves 4.10s
