I'm ready to start a build... now what???

2001 Z28, auto trans, all stock. I am new to performance builds but I did make the big buy last month and I am well pleased with my Z. I have many questions and have been to several local shops only to see the dollar signs swimming in their eyes. This Z will not be raced. Here is the list that I want to do...

1- Long headers and true duels without cats, can the cats go? How are the O2 sensors handled? This car sits low, is it possible for duels?

2- Cams, nothing near racing, street friendly.

3- Ignition step up, should it be done given everything else?

4- MAF sensor upgrade, is it needed?

5- The biggest question given that this car will not be raced, will the stock trans and rear end handle these things that I want to do? Is there a given horsepower or torque as a rule of thumb for stock?

If there are any specific web sites that will be handy please include. Thanks.

What springs are on the car? Is it really that much of a drop? You might want to try an exhaust shop and ask if they can run true duals under the car without sacrificing ground clearance. You can either use o2 simulators or have them tuned out with a custom tune. A custom tune afterwards is a good idea and will net you a few more HP too.

There are entirely too many street friendly cams for the LS1. I'm sure if you call up a reputable vendor they will have plenty of suggestions.

Ignition on the LS1 is top notch and should not need to be touched. Maybe a good tune up but that is all.

No MAF upgrade is needed on a stock car. A tune is much more suited for your goal.

The auto transmission in these cars is not the strongest ever created but it's also not the weakest. In an auto car you are good to a certain point. As long as you don't beat on it daily I see no issues with it. The rear end in a auto car with bolt ons should last you quite some time. You may want to do a 3.42/3.73 gear upgrade also. Should last without conflict.

1) Pacesetter Longtubes and the Texas-speed true dual exhaust. Around $850 for both.

2) Futral Motorsports F-13

3) Stock ignition. Worked for my 530rwhp 408ci Vette perfectly.

4) Stock MAF.

5) I'd definetly go with an aftermarket torque converter. They can easily knock 4/10s off your 1/4 mile time or better and make the auto car much more fun to drive. Yank, Vigilante, or Pro-Torque 2800-3200 if you aren't going to race it. The stock transmission should be fine for that power level.

I'd also invest in some 3.73 gears.
