After camshaft installation how do your cars react when you first start them up. With no tuning the car seems to want some extra air to keep an idle. I know this is to be expected, however my question is what is the best way to keep the car running until i tune it. A simple throttle blade adjustment picked her up but i know this is just a band aid until the tune. Any pointers would be appreciated.

^ get a tune.. sorry but that's the only way.. You really shouldn't mess with the screw setting for the throttle blade. You could also potentially damage the engine by running it with out a tune.

My buddy's MS4 was idling at about 900rpm w/o a tune.

 

A lot of folks do their own mechanical work with the fore knowledge that with some mods it WILL need to be tuned before driving.

 

If it's a 224 cam or smaller, you can get away with a tune for a short while and be ok. Bigger cams...I wouldn't mess around. Get that bish tuned!

 

You can drill a small hole the TB blade to get more air in.....but once again as the others said, there's a "right" way to do things and a "not-so-right" way.

 

I know theres no way around the tune, the problem was that speed inc couldnt get my buddies car on the dyno for 2 weeks and I already did his cam swap. Just looking for a safe way to limp the car there because the car wants to die when it isn't getting any air.

 

Adjusting the throttle blade adjustment is an OK temporary fix. It may need to be opened later anyway to get the count on the idle motor where it's supposed to be.

What size is the cam. The 305 in your sig should run fine with no adjusting at all.

The cam specs are 224 230 and .575 .585. I havent had my LT1 tuned with the 305 cam and she stil dropped 5 tenths in the quarter, the only problem is that my AFR'S are pig rich. I get down to 11.4 anywhere above 5000rpm. The LS1 cam swap i did before this one was a huge texas speed cam and the car didnt want to run at all. I think that one was 234 238 .595 .595, But all i did with that one was open the blades a hair to get her to the dyno.
