Post Ideas on A/C compressor........

For no obvious reason my compressor went kaflooey the other night. I started the car, like had been done 3 or 4 times that day, and from out of nowhere there's this noise like nuts and bolts were being rattled around somewhere in the front of the engine. Turns out the noise came from the compressor, and the dealership needs $700 for another one.....that's just the part, for those of you that would say replace it yourself. My intention is to take it apart this weekend--I may have to take it to be fixed at a local shop. Who has had any dealings with a bad compressor, what was the fix; cost???? Lastly, and once again, does anyone in North Texas know where I can find the illusive all F-body salvage yard that I know at least USED to exist just north of Dallas or Allen???? As I remember they only handled later model cars.....and I need them.

Thanx in advance!!!
