I made the Big Change

Ok guys, I have posted briefly a couple of times, now for probably the most important one. I am making the switch.. hope its worth it. I had a 97 mustang cobra and it is now sold. I am picking up a 98-02 Camaro (haven't found exactly what I want yet so I can't specifiy). It will most likely have nothing more than slp exhaust done. My goal for this beast is to find it somewhere in the range of 450hp n/a. Help me with the most reasonable mods for this vehicle to get me there. Also, if you have time, links to things would be awesome. Another big question I have is gearing. How should these cars be geared? I had 4.10's in mine and it was quick (although not much highway because it was a 5spd) but I know Camaros redline quicker than my 6800 did. I am lookin for everyones help and thoughts. Thanks.. hope I made the right decision

Lid, Long tubes, off road y, aftermarket catback, cam, heads and with a tune you should be there.

I have 4:10's in my 2000 ss and I love them. Go with the 4:10's just don't abuse the rear end or you will be up grading that next. The stock rear's don't like lots of HP.

450 at the motor or at the wheels?

475+ at the motor would be bolt-ons + a cam. I also suggest the Futral Motorsports F-14.

450+ at the wheels would be the addition of heads and a FAST 90/90 intake manifold/throttle body. I suggest ported LS1 or LS6 heads or for the same price the Dart 205cc, 225cc, or if you have a pile of money lying around, the AFR 205cc or 225cc small chambers.

Also, pick up an 01 if you can, since it had the LS6 intake manifold and 28# injectors. You won't need to upgrade either of those until you get heads.

PM me if you need more help and are new to these motors.

Re: I made the Big Change

You forgot to say if you are getting a auto or stick. Auto, you will get the 3.73 gears, stick 4.10's. I,m putting down 328 at wheels w/ the add of Z06 intake and mid length w/ offroad y-pipe and dyno tune. Eveybody is saying that heads and cam will give me another 125hp?

Mikey's in PA, he does excellent cam/head work on LS1's

Google, rapidmotorsports first one on the list.

Would put a direct link, not sure if he's a supporting vendor though.

Re: I made the Big Change

I would go 2001-2002 for as mentioned LS6 intake for starters, better flowing manifolds also. A big thing for the LS1 is piston slap across the board in all equipped vehicles. Mine has 65k miles and slaps like crazy when cold. Most all of them slap badly that are younger than 2001. Later they changed the tolerances ever so slightly to rid the motor of this problem. When the ones with slap warm up, the noise will go away usually in about 5-8 minutes. There is no known cure for the slap problem. GM just plays stupid!

These cars are way quick though. I have had 5 mustangs and none sounded as good, or produced torque like the LS1 does. I have a cam and bolt ons and made 350rwhp on a stang dyno even with an auto trans. This would be 437.5 at the crank. I ran 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds.....1/4 mile in 12.5, and 1/8 mile in 8.1 sec. Waaaaay faster than any bolt on stang, or even s-charged fox body I had for a while. I figure the camaro has twice the hp as my current slow 96GT which has 220 vs almost 440 in the Z28. You would need a 200 shot of nitrous to compare! I love the Z28, which likes mods and produce big power for a 3-5000 dollar investment you can make 400rwhp. Heads, cam, intake, exhaust, and headers with a 6-speed can get you there!
