I am looking for some help/directions/recommendations

I am looking for some help/directions/recommendations for what to do with my camaro (98 SS LS1) It has a knocking coming from the engine. I took it to a shop to see what it really is, it is a bad lifter in cylinder 1. He said it would cost around 1100 to replace, but the car has over 250k miles on it and I plan to get a new camaro in about a year. Anyone have any suggestion on something cheaper to do to "fix" it or get it buy for now.

I dont know a lot about engines but I do have a brain and could follow direction on replacing this myself if this is something you think a beginner could do? What kind of tools would I need? Or should I just take it somewhere to get fixed?

This is not a good job for a beginner. You should shop for a better price. Or find a buddy that has some experience with this kind of work and throw him some cash for helping/teaching you.

How is your oil pressure - are you sure it is not rod knock? That is how I have seen most ls1's die of old age.

You have to pull the head to replace the lifter, so it is a big job.

The oil pressure is not bad but the gauge does to a lot of small jumps back and forth like the pressure is jittering or something?

So how bad is it to drive on the car like it is if its a bad lifter? The guy at the shop said it would not hurt it, I don't know to much about this kind of stuff but I would think it would hurt something?

I would post about this in your regional section here: https://www.camaroz28.com/forums/west-north-central-26/
and see if anyone responds that would be willing to help you out. Then you guys could work out the details on price.

Also, does anyone know what will happen to the engine or lifter if i continue to drive it like it is? With the lifter just break and I lose a cylinder or will it blow the engine or like what will really happen?
