Used LS6 engines?

I'm lookin for a used LS6 engine (or a cheap rebuilt one?) to stuff into the 3rd gen I'm getting. Does anyone know of a place near St. Louis that would have a supply of them?

I'm looking at putting the GMPP/Edelbrock 4 barrel intake on it so I can get away from the computers and sensors (I know a couple are still required for the MSD igntion). So it doesn't matter if it comes with the ECM or not because its gonna be sold anyway if it does.

Also I had a quick question. I know the LS7 is a 427ci, but is it still a small block like the rest of the LS motors? or is it actually a big block? I've looked at wikipedia and stuff and can't seem to find that specific kind of info. From that I'm thinking its a small block but looking for confirmation.

Thanks,

-Chris

''small block and big block'' are old school terms that don't apply to Gen III and up engines. LS1,2,3,6,7 all the same external size.

You've got about as much luck finding a used LS6 Gen III engine as you do finding a used LS6 BBC.

New LS6s can be had for $3000.

Outside of a situation where racing class rules require it, I don't understand why someone would take a perfectly good LSx and ruin it with a carburetor.

Because I love carb's and want an all mechanical car (with the given basic electronics to run the spark plugs and stuff).

And from what I've read on several sites (mag's, gmpp, etc..) the 4 brl intake for the lsx motors actually makes more horsepower than the stock config

10-15 peak HP does not warrant going back in technology, besides virtually all test i have seen HP went up 10-15 but lost TQ thats not something i would like.
Carbs had their hay day

It probably does, but comparing stock to aftermarket isn't an even comparison. Compare that manifold to something like the FAST LSX intake and you'll find it's not any better.

check ebay, and you could even try craigslist

personally i would build a ls1 or even use a ls2 before a ls6 unless i found one cheap

If you're planning extensive mods (in particular, heads and cam), there's really no meaningful difference between an LS1 and an LS6, except that the LS1 will probably cost you less.

Only when put on either a large displacement engine where the traditional intake choices become a restriction, or an aggressive small displacement high RPM engine. So unless you plan to spin that 346 to 7000rpm+, the carb intake may not be the best choice.

I think the easiest way to find LS engines is if they are in a truck.

The cheapest in the end will likely be a crate engine though.

Yeah I had looked into getting an LS out of a truck, but from what I've read most of them don't have the alum block the car lsx motors came with. I'm not planning on making a track only car, but I do want to shave some weight off. I've already picked out the tubular cradle and other parts to shave some weight off.

I've been lookin on CL and sadly from what I seen I can buy an LSx camaro for the price of just the motor (meaning I can scrounge seats/etc.. from it lol)

Thanks for the reply's (even tho some are shaming me for wanting to put a carb on a LSx motor...) Where's the love for the old school and modified? I mean come on how many people do you know rockin a LSx motor? Alot right? How many of those are using "non-standard" mods? I think it'd be cool to rock a carb on one.

Yeah FI has become the coolest newest thing out there, but some of us still love the old school roots we grew up with (that and when a sensor decides to crap its guts out and your FI LSx motor dies and leaves you stranded, I'll stop and give ya a lift)

I've been driving FI motors all my life, and while I've had sensors fail, I've never had them leave me stranded entirely. You just limp along.

Granted its on my wife's Focus... but yeah... I've had to go rescue her because it got cranky... Plus carb's don't get the love they earned because they were replaced with something newer.
