hp sound right??

My friend has a 99 Camaro SS. I believe its the SLP edition. Anyway, the mods he has is the LS6 intake manifold with EGR delete, dyno tuning and I think he has an intake.
He told me that after dyno tuning he made about 310rwhp. I was thinking about that and with the xtra air flow and tuning, that sounds kind of low. Shouldn't it be up there?
Secondly, how much hp gain is expected to rwhp with long tubes and high flow cats?
thanks

Re: hp sound right??

I just put down 324.1 rwhp last tuesday in my 99SS. The torque was around 335 i believe. I have the Jet hot long tubes, magnaflow exhaust (no cats) and SLP lid with the air and egr delete. I wasn't able to get the tune because my programmer wasn't working right or something. The guy doing it said i should be able to make about 10 more horses with a decent tune. Hope this helps!!

Re: hp sound right??

1. What kind of dyno?
2. What were his base numbers?
3. Why in the hell would someone spend the cash for a dyno tune with so few mods?

Re: hp sound right??

My thoughts as well!!! I have been in the LT1 world now for a couple years and have been advising my friend since I know WAY more, and he would not obviously listen to me. I did tell him dyno tuning comes very last so $ spent gets the max out of everything harmoniously.

I dont know if his tuner is being up front with him. I know 00+ years have a lot more going from the factory but a 99 with an LS6 intake should have potential.

Another friend at a different shop said he has seen LS1's of ~99's easily make decent 330hp with the mild correct parts, etc.

At this point he is throwing $ out. Hey, if people dont wanna listen, let the shop make $. You can only be so nice and patient.

He will be mad when my LT1 gives him a real run for his money (I love and have lots of respect for LS1's).

Re: hp sound right??

310 still isn't bad. He could have started at 290 whp. So a 20 hp gain from intake and lid would be very good. It all depends on the dyno and you can't compare one to the next.

If it was an SLP edition the SLP options IIRC are on the passenger side door jamb. I doubt it is since he added a lid and you don't mention a catback.

Not to be a butt, but judging from your ETs, if you run him NA even making 310 hp he'll still pull you. I wasn't making 310whp stock but I ran 13.56 even being new to the car. I only had it for 2 weeks and obviously wasn't used to it. So I rolled off the line then got on it to keep from spinning like mad. This was after hot lapping and in full street trim too. Even my very first run in the thing I launched hard and spun bad and still managed to stay in the 13.90's.

one thing not mentioned. What trans? 310 in an a4 is pretty stout.

Re: hp sound right??

I did fail to mention it has an "SLP catback". He must have made about 290hp stock before the manifold.
This is thru a six speed. I have not seen many people that really know how to manipulate the stick, as it were.
I ran 14.17 bone stock on a GOOD day at elevation.
Since, elevations have not been that great at all, and my 60's are everywhere.
My friend I dont think has ever been to track.
I have heard stories of 00+ LS1's putting down 370rwhp with just cams and minor bolt ons.
Im about to put in shorty headers and 1.6 roller rockers. He for sure cant beat the LT1 bottom end torque.
We'll see...Im just looking out for him, but his numbers are really unrealistic. He thinks the way his car, as Ive told it, with long tubes and high flow cats (aftermarket Y) that it will be worth 50 rwhp!
Im assuming most of us on here have been doing this car stuff, drag racing, modding, etc for at least a couple of years?

Re: hp sound right??

370rwhp on cam only is easy. you can do that and probably still pass emissions (assuming you put cats on)

i'm at nearly 400hp to the wheels, stock heads.

LS1s come from the factory with 1.7 rockers....and upgrade would be to 1.8s.

and LTs with a catted Ypipe will get you about 15hp to the wheels.

Re: hp sound right??

LT's aren't good for 50 hp.
I've seen a bolt on only LS1 get 350 whp. As stated elsewhere, thats what you always see being talked about, not the run of the mill results. Go to a dyno day with a lot of LS1's and you'll see that most of them won't do that. Last dyno day I went to I saw an LS1 Firechicken make in the high 280 range. He had true duals (with chambered stick mufflers) and a lid.

With mids, catted Y, mufflex, mail order tune, and a lid I made best of 320hp and 330 lb/ft (IIRC) in my 00. On a different day I only made 315hp. So I personally wouldn't worry about it.

Ya, I've been modding cars since before I could drive. I'm 34 now, so I guess I have a couple years experience. My current car is not set up for drags though.

Re: hp sound right??

Sounds a little low but every car is different. I've seen car make less and more. My old 01 Z put down 300rwhp/320rwtq stock. After lid and maf it was 320rwhp/340rwtq. Dont get cought up in dyno numbers buddy. They are just numbers.
