Question HP on 2002 Transam

My mother bought a 2002 WS6 and it says ram air on the scoop but the air filter box is no different then my 02 Z, they told her it was rated at 325 hp, I don't think so because on Car&driver 2 wks ago they said only the SS & the 35th annivarsey transam with the functional hood was rated @ 320. Any info on this thanks

Cool

Don't stress on advertised HP numbers. The actual numbers that the LS1 has been putting down is in the neighborhood of 280-300 at the rear wheels bone stock. That's an easy 340 at the motor.Enjoy the car

Well, on paper the 2002 WS6 Trans AM is rated at 325 hp, same as the SS, unless it has the SLP 345 hp package. So the 325 hp is correct. What's confusing me is that you said the air box is the same as the one in your 02 Z. The opening on the WS6 lower air box is larger than the one on regular T/As and Zs. So the lower air box should be different. Hope that helps.

The air box looks the same, but in reality it is spaced slightly different. The opening is taller.

Also, the ram-air on the T/A is more efficient (in my opinion) than the ram-air on the SS.

On the SS, the air comes in halfway down the hood, splits through a pair of ducts that brings is a full 360* and dumps it in front of the airbox.

On the T/A, the air comes in right in front of the airbox, goes through a pair of baffles and dumps in front of the airbox. On mine, I removed the 2nd baffle and now the air comes in and turns down, straight in front of the airbox.

Also, as has been stated before ... the F-Body LS1 is underrated. Probably because GM doesn't want it to tread too close to the sacred ground of the 'Vette's HP rating.

It's not unusual for a Z28 or T/A (non ram-air) to dyno 300 HP at the rear wheels. Factor in a 15% drivetrain loss, and you get 352 HP at the flywheel. GM rates them at what, 310? The Ram-Air only comes into play at a higher speed ... until then, it's the same as the non ram-air models. But, since the motor is only rated at 310, they can say the Ram-Air models make 325 and still fall well within the more realistic 350 HP rating.
