How to tell what kind of motor?

I'm looking to buy a 95 z28 6sp camaro and the owner isn't sure if its an lt1 or ls1. How would I know the difference in the motors?

assuming its stock, Lt1's were used from 93-97 and 98-02 have ls1's.

another way, is the intake on it plastic (ls1) or aluminum and shaped like a rectangle on top. (lt1)

to add a little to it, the LS1 intake is all curved and whatnot, the LT1 isn't.

Not all people know their engine in their car. Some people see a car, they like it, so they buy it. Drive it for 6 months and sell it. Most people who own an F body know what they got. When I bought my 83 trans am used which was my first car, the owner only new it was a v8. Not nowing alot about cars back then when I was young, just like every single person on this board ( Nobody is born with f-body knowledge ) it took me a while to figure out what I had. In fact it took me 4 months because I was in the Air Force and was deployed about 2 weeks after buying the car. Do you really thing a little old lady know's what's in her buick or caddy.

We're pretty sure it's all stock so probably lt1. What's the typical difference in horsepower between the two?

Re: How to tell what kind of motor?

the LT1 has a cast iron block and the LS1 has an aluminum block, if you take a magnet and it attracts to it its an LT1

If the owner doesn't know alot about it, talk like "eh it's only this and that", and shoot him a low number $. Never know, you may have stumbled onto an opportunity for a great deal.

Re: How to tell what kind of motor?

LS1 has a composite plastic intake manifold and the LT1 has an aluminum intake manifold --- pretty easy to tell the difference even if that's the absolutely only thing you look at.

LT1s in F-bodies = '93-'97
LS1s in F-bodies = '98-'02

Spray the engine with water. If the car won't start, you know it is an LT1 since the opti is fried

and she probably knows what engine is under there. besides, people that dont know anything about their cars tend to not drive manual. which the car in question is.

I can totally see this being the deal breaker... ...leaving the current owner of the vehicle without a running car :P
