high oil pressure?

My oil pressure is around 45psi when the engine is pretty cold. it drops down to right around 40psi when warmed up, and i think the highest it's been was 60 at high RPMs. That seems a bit high to me. Also, maybe im just imagining it, but it seems to slowly be creeping up over time. If i remember correctly, when i got the car a month ago, it was more like 40psi cold. The oil is the stuff the dealer put in. It looked almost new when i got the car, and i put 500miles on it. Should i be worried?

Re: high oil pressure?

The oil pressure for these cars can be a bit all over the place and when it gets really hot out, numbers as low as 5 psi are normal. I think it even states that in the manual. People here have had a lot of success here with seafoam. How many miles on your car? If you add it to your oil, make sure you follow the instructions and change the oil quickly.

Re: high oil pressure?

well, today, i revved the engine a bit when it wasnt quite warm (yes, i know, bad idea), but the pressure got close to 80psi. the car has 43k miles. im just worried about what kind of crap the dealer may have put in there.

Change the oil and put some Mobil1 in there if you are concerned. Get a quality filter as will. The pressure will be higher upon startup which is normal.

It is not as bad as you think since you can run the Mobil 1 for longer. I also use a Mobil 1 filter. I don't daily drive my LS1, but I daily drive my LS2 GTO. They both share an oil life monitoring system that you should feel fine following. Put the Mobil 1 synthetic in with a good filter, reset the oil life monitor, and be on your way. The car will let you know when it needs another oil change.

Re: high oil pressure?

My all stock internals Trans Am has 65 PSI on cold start at idle. If I leave before warming up, my pressure will go to like 75 PSI if I hit 2,000 RPM. Once it warms up, I have 45 PSI at hot idle and 50-55 while cruising. If I get on it, I have seen it get up to about 70 PSI while warmed up at about 6,000 RPM.

You have nothing to worry about. Brand and types of oil are not as important as the quality of filter you run. I run a stock ACDelco PF46 with Valvoline Syntech. I mainly just say to stay away from Fram and other off brand filters and you will be fine.

Re: high oil pressure?

fram is the cheapest isnt it? because im sure the dealer would never use anything expensive. hell, they filled up the tank with 87 octane gas. thanks for the advice though, i appreciate it

Don't use Fram. A GM dealer would use an AC/DELCO filter which is somewhere in the middle from all I have read. If you are going to do changes when the car tells you to, then get a quality filter that will last longer. I use Mobil 1 filters. Yeah, they are a bit more expensive up front, but you are going to get more life out of it.

Re: high oil pressure?

Mobil 1 all the way for oil changes. Your oil pressure is perfectly normal, mine is around 80psi at start up and drops to around 50 fully warmed up but i have an aftermarket pump

thanks for the peace of mind i have a feeling the dealer may have put heavier oil in than they were supposed to. cant wait to change it. just hard to justify an expensive oil change when the current oil has like 1000miles, and is clean
