how to tell..ls1 or ls6

when looking down on the engine bay how would you tell the difference between an ls1 and an ls6. For example if there were two different camaros next to each other one with the ls1 and one with the ls6. What would be some distinguishing features about one that the other wouldnt have.......................thanks guys.

on the top of the block if it has a flat smooth spot insted of a little circle or if it is in a z06 but even if the camaro had the smooth and not the circle it might just be a ls6 block do a search there is a huge thread about the ls6 block

Look for the head casting number, 241 for the LS1, 243 for the LS6. (Just under the oil filler on the bottom right corner of the head).
The block means little, new LS1s come with the same block assembly as LS6s. The only other difference is the cam.

so you're telling me if an 2002 SS camaro (ls1 powererd) was sitting next to another 2002 SS camaro (except it is ls6 powered), you would not be able to tell which one is which just by looking at the engine bay??????

thanks pg318 - about the head casting number i mean

There are no factory LS6 powered Camaros, the nearest is GMMG's ZL-1 version link or cars with a conversion to LS6 spec, such as this , but if there were, the head number would be the only visible difference.

i know that there are no factory powered ls6 camaros..........one of my friends just blew his ls1 up and i think he put a brand new ls6 in its place, but im not sure. Because he says its an ls1, but i see posts on this website indicating otherwise. For example -- I have seen him asking if the ls6 fits in with no mechanical problems and oil pan clearance, etc. I am just wondering how to tell each engine apart by looking at them. So i can tell which one it is, because to me they both look the same. Thanks for the help pg318

Look at the block. If you have a little "bullseye" by the passenger side head on the block, then you have ls1. If you do not have it, then you have the ls6. Do not look at the head numbers (241 for ls1). No f bodies came from the factory with ls6 heads or cams as some would lead you to believe. I think 15% of 2001 f bodies have the ls6 block and 30% of the 2002's have them. Look at the long disscussion on the SLP forum for more details. Oh yea, just because you may have an ls6 block does not mean you have an ls6. You are still lacking the heads and cam.

The only LS6 crate engines I have seen come fitted with the Corvette oil pan, (since they're only emissions approved for the Z06), a shallow one with batwings, which doesn't fit the Camaro, but some kits did include the F-body pan to swap, otherwise the one from the old engine would have to be fitted. Other than that, the crank pulley/harmonic damper, belt tensioner, and Y-body exhaust manifolds if they were fitted would have to be changed, but the bare engine will bolt in otherwise.

i think maybe he got the engine from scoggin dickey. He makes the ls6 for f-bodies and it came with an f-body oil pan installed on it. So everything would fit, but im not sure about bolting stuff up to it.

I am just wondering, because i think he is telling me he got another ls1 in its place, but i think he really put an ls6 in there. WHAT A SLEEPER for other cars with mods. So i was wondering how to tell the ls6 apart from the ls1 just by opening the hood and looking at the engine.

I will check the head casting numbers. where are they???

thanks guys
