How To Quite Down My Noise 2002 LS1
How To Quite Down My Noise 2002 LS1
Question ?
Are their any additives that you people have found that helps to quiet down a 2002 LS1 with 8000 miles that has the lifter/piston slap at startup. I hate the way the engine rattles during a warm start, especially at a car show. I was thinking that Lucas or someone simular has a product that could help.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

I also have severe piston slap (the kind where guys say, "And I thought MINE was bad! Jeez!!!"
) and I tried Lucas for many many oil changes and it helped some. But only by about 1/3!
Then there is the high mileage engine stuff that comes in a long silver paper can...forget the name, High mileage Engine treatment or something....although thick as honey it didn't work much better...
Now....drumroll please....Advance Auto Smoke Treatment, (P/N A6593) absolutely cured it.
(Hey I didn't like the idea of putting that in my engine either but I figure it can't hurt anything more than the slap is already doing!)
Bar's Leaks Smoke Away appears to be the exact same super thick honey stuff. In all the auto stores.
If Royal Purple works, as Steve suggests, that would really seem better. I'll try it next time.... Sounds like it has suspended MB particles (Yes, that is Molibdium del Sulfide - what he said) to help fill the gap without losing any friction advantage since MB is a super lubricant as a solid by itself, but suspended in oil...this might help keep the thin and the thick so to speak so you coat the parts quickly on start up yet cushion or fill the slap.
Let us know how you make out.

Thanks guys for the help. I will try Royal Purple first. Also will check out their web site to see what this stuff is. Like any treatment it may take a few miles and a couple of oil changes to get it worked in.
More to come.

Mobile 1 synthetic...but I think that is a mistake.
I agree with Greed4Speed now...use conventional oil...synthetic is not needed...we change our oil every 3K anyway don't we?
I'm going to try that with the thick stuff too
.
Best of luck and let us know....

Ok, I added the Advance Auto Smoke Treatment to my non synthetic oil which had been treated with Prolong (which seemed to help reduce the piston slap when first added). The oil has about 500 miles. After a week, the slap has GOTTEN MUCH WORSE!
I don't know if this is due to the prolong already in the oil, or ecause it's not synthetic, or both, or neither. I think I'll apply the scientific method and change to the Mobil One / Smoke treatment combo and see if i can reproduce Rambo's results. If not, maybe a Royal Purple / Prolong combo...Or Lucas / Prolong...or Slick 50....
By the way, if the tall silver can was "Restore", I can also confirm it had no effect.

Yes, RESTORE did not do much, that's the one.
OK: A bottle of Advance Auto stuff and another of Bar's Smoke B Gone cured it completely for while.... after a few days it starts coming back...(at least with synthetic oil.) But the slap goes away a lot more quickly on warm up than ever before. Just a couple light revs to 3-4000 after a minute does it.
I don't know how many 15 oz. bottles you can put in before it starts to cause other problems with your engine. I'll try a total of 3 bottles next but that's like a quart and a half out of six. That's about as much as I want to go.
Check your oil level too, could be low...gets bad when low!

Re: How To Quite Down My Noise 2002 LS1
I'd try either louder exhaust, or more volume on the stereo
. Mine's been noisy as hell since brand new as well ... not just the piston slap when cold (that's not been real bad, and it goes away) but the lifter noise
. For an engine that works so well, it sure sounds like crap

Yeah guys, an 00 SS sounding off here. Same problems. Mine is fine right at startup, but once the engine gets warm, the tick tick tick tick appears.
Its annoying as hell I tell you.
I tried 15w50 Mobil1 extended mileage oil (thick as honey) and that made the problem way worse. I then went back to a 5w30 Mobil 1 synthetic (like water). It doesnt tick as bad, but it still ticks.
I have had some recommendations on using Castrol German made 0w30. Thats my next project. ill post what happens.
