How much quicker are LS1 SSs from each progressive year?

I know the '01-'01 SSs are quicker than the '98-'00, but HOW much quicker? And what bout the '98-'00 ones compared to each other. Thanks. I hope that made sense. Haha. I'm seriously thinking about selling my LT1 because LS1s, from what I hear, accelerate very quickly at highway speeds and that's where I like to do most of my racing and "fun time". LoL.

the 01 and 02's are faster bone stock due to the fact that thye both come with the ls6 intake manifold. As far as the 98-00 f-bodies, the 99 and 00 are supposed to be faster, but I found that stock to stock the 98's are a little bit faster. When you get into doing head/cam work supposedly the 98's don't lay down as much HP as teh 99-02's

There is no real performance differences between 98-00 models. There were minor differences but nothing you'll see on a dyno or 1/4 mile track. Only the 01 & 02 models have a noticeable difference. But even that is only about a 10 rwhp advantage. I'd get an 01 or 02 if funds allow otherwise I would just get any year you find a good deal on.

Good Luck

10 rwhp?? i dont think so. While the 01-02 models did have the ls6 intake, they also had less aggressive heads if i'm not mistaken. I'd say 5rwhp at the most. And let me remind you that putting an ls6 intake in a 99 is easier and cheaper than modifying heads in an 02.

99-02 heads are all the same, 01-02's got the LQ4 (truck) cam at the same time as the LS6 intake. The cam is fairly mild, and lower lift and duration than the <01s, but has a very wide band. Is a cam cheaper than the intake?

There was a slight difference in cams but to my knowledge the heads were the same. 5-10 rwhp is the normal dyno difference between 98-00 and the 01/02 models. 10 rwhp maybe on the high end but it is realistic. Even with the full 10rwhp difference your talking 1/10 in the 1/4 mile advantage. Not exactly earth shattering.

But we will just have to disagree on this because I see 5 rwhp as a minimum and you see it as a maximum. We can agree to disagree I suppose.

i'm no expert but what i remember reading is the 01-02 have slightly better exhaust manifolds, and the ls6 intake however the 99-00 has a 498 lift cam compared to a aprox 468 lift on the 01-02. so they are very comparible in horsepower. last fall is when i was reseaching, the brains getting rusty these days. also the SS & ws6 have better exhaust (factory catback).

I forgot about that. The exhaust manifold was better on the 01 and 02 models. Whenever people asked about shortie headers the answers I recall was always you'd gain about 5 rwhp in 98-00 models and nothing in 01/02 models since they flow as well as shorties.

But the cam was slightly more aggressive in the 98-00 models so I think that negated the gain from the exhaust manifold leaving the 5-10 rwhp gains from the ls6 intake manifold as actual dyno seen gains. But again it's 1/10 faster on average (big deal). So maybe a 2002 auto pulls a 13.4 @ 104 vs a 98-00 pulling 13.5 @ 103.5 or something like that. It's not enough IMO to worry about. I'd just find the car I liked the best at the best price regardless of the year. Besides with some 01/02 guys upgrading to LSX intake you might be able to find a used LS6 intake manifold and pop it on a 98-00 model for cheap.

But it's all academic any way once you start modding because of the LSX intake manifold, LT headers and vast selection of cams.

I just had some work done on my 2002 Z28 with HP tuner and my friend had work done on his 2000 Z28 (exact same car, color and all, just a different year). It seems that GM took 3 degrees of timing out of the 01 and 02 cars on the top end as well as the smaller cam (we added it back). So, it appears that GM may have changed the tuning to kill off some hp as well. This is just based on what I learned this weekend when we did some tuning on both cars. Has anyone else seen this?

And, stock (non SS), my 2002 Z28 dynoed 299.7hp and 317.5 ft lbs at 5600 miles with a K&N and a lid, otherwise stock. It's an M6. I don't think there is whole lot of difference between years, maybe a slight bit....

That's a low number for a 2002 M6 with a Lid. You should have been at least that much bone stock and then up 8-10 rwhp with the lid. But this isn't an exact science. There have been some 02 Z28 M6's that dynoed 315 rwhp completely stock while others have dynoed 295 rwhp. Also depends on where you get the car dynoed as some dynos just tend to be more generous then others.

That's possible if your referring to the exhaust manifold. I'm not sure if the better flowing one came out in 2000 or 2001. The intake manifold was definately not upgraded until 2001 so you've gotta have a ls1 intake unless it was swapped by a previous owner.

I thought that as well. But, I drove the car there and dynoed it hot. Then, we made 6 pulls or so and power dropped on each one. So, I suspect it may make more power when it is on the street than when heat soaked on a dyno. But, that is what the numbers showed, so I can't fake that one. I made one dragstrip pass on street tires (at 1000 miles or so) and ran a 14.04@102.5 with a 2.6 60 foot time ("launched" it at 900 rpm, like leaving a traffic light). So, the MPH makes me think the power is "reasonable" and it was a real easy pass (I hadn't mailed the first payment yet).

Just seems to show that the 2002 cars are not all "ringers".

The dyno was a mobile Dynojet.
