Question How much potential do LS motors have?

As you can see in my sig, I am restoring my Third Gen Z28. I was planning on building up a motor but the more and more research I do, It seems that the cost would be astrinomical. Of course the idea ran through my head of dropping an LS1 or LS6 motor in my car. Ultimately, I want to know how much potential those motors have.

LS1 + Port/Valve job + Cam + Intake + Ignition = ????

That same question + 15 lbs of boost = ???

Would I have to build the bottom end for any of these mods, specifically the boost??

Thanks in advance

Nick

Re: How much potential do LS motors have?

my current setup:

99 LS1, just under 60k miles.
233/233 cam (pretty decent size), stock heads, LS6 intake, headers and small bolt ons....about 425hp conservatively rated.

$1500 in ported heads and i should be pushing 475hp.

currently i still get 24mpg give or take on the highway, this is with the 6speed and 3.42 gears.

you don't need to build the bottom end for a heads/cam setup.

for that much boost...YES.

with a stiffer cam and bigger heads you could easily exceed 500hp at the crank.

remember, the LS block is a 6 bolt design, 4 in standard configuration and 2 from the side.

How much boost can I get away with while having a stock bottom end (without pinging and knocking)?

How much Boost can I have with Forged crank, push rods, connecting rods, etc?

Re: How much potential do LS motors have?

i dont know much about the blower, but i would guesstimate no more than 8 or 9# of boost with a stock bottom end, even that who knows how long it could last.

from my personal knowledge and for i have seen, i wouldnt strap a blower on a ls block unless u beefed it up, and especially if you plan on running 12, 15+ #'s of boost!
i think the ls block is great!

good luck,
dave

Re: How much potential do LS motors have?

forged internals are just the tip of the iceberg. i have forged and still run 10.3:1 cr. big problem with boost is detonation. high octane and some dished pistons will help. more to it, and others will chime in, just dont think "i have forged, im all set" if i went with fi and big boost id have problems. from what im told with limits, im sure its been surpassed but seen a trailer queen t/a with forged rotating assembly up to 402ci, h/c, s/c, pushing 2300+hp. i believe the same car is profiled by procharger. limits are based on your budget and if you want to run race fuel and can get away with state inspection. (obviously the above mentioned is not street legal)

lol a stock ls1 engine pushing 15 lbs of boost... you probably wouldn't even get up the street.

Stock ls1 engines can probably handle 4-5lbs of boost. But I've still seen them blow with that little amount.

i agree on you not making it far with that much boost on a stock block, but can go a little more than 4-5, maybe 6-7. also, local guy here does run 12psi stock, but he is waiting for it to blow up.why? i dont know.
