How much oil and what weight for my 98 LS1?

I know its probably been discussed before, and its a very basic question, but was not able to come up with good search results.

How much oil will I need for an oil change in my 98 LS1. I plan on going with the standard AC Delco filter, not one of the larger than factory sized ones.

I think its like 4.7 quarts or something like that, but I don't remember, and I can't remember what weight of oil I should be using.

Is that what the manual says? I'm just wondering what it is supposed to be from the factory.

You guys might be right, but I thought it was an oddball amount like 5.7 or something quarts.

Most go with 5.5 quarts. After doing a little research when I had my engine out, you can run almost 6.5 quarts without the oil level coming into contact with the rotating assembly even with the engine off. I run 6 quarts with a stock sized filter. The more oil the better.

...put in 5 quarts then check the level...prolly have 2 add another 1/2 quart..more oil the better?...too much oil is worse than not having enough....let me know when ur oil starts forcing itself out of the block

Did you not read my post? Anyway thanks for the advice I keep you up to date on the oil "forcing itself out of the block". And yes, the more oil the better - as long as it doesn't create windage problems.

5.5 qts Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30 and a AC delco PF46 filter

I heard that Castrol Syntec gives 5 HP and the free sticker gives another 5, but only when you put it in the engine bay

I just turned over 92K and my only complaint is the damn rings on my 2001...burns a scoche of oil (1/2 qt every 1500-ish miles), nuthin compared to a '86 suburban I had for a while.

anyway mileage does not really matter, its debatable to go to the "high milage" M1.
