I am pretty sure that spec is 5.5 quarts with filter. I use 6 quarts on the street, and 7 for track use. Several friends use the same and have had no problems. Mike Patterson (T2 racer) suggested the 7 for track use.

Look at the back of your owner's manual and you'll see that it says 5.5 quarts for the 5.7L.

I always follow the owner's manual.

I just changed my oil and put exactly 5.5 quarts of Mobil 1 10w-30 without prefilling the filter. I checked the oil and and it is 3/4 the way up the cross hatches. Then I save the other half quart to top off if I need it.

chuck,Did this guy give reason for 7 qt.?? The only reason I can think of is.That the extra 1.5 qts. will compensate for the slosh effect the oil does in the pan,to help keep it where the pick-up tube can get it in continual hard turns and heavy braking.
Pretty interested in this since mine will see road track use,if that is the reason dont they have pans w/baffles to help that?

stik98 just did mine this weekend 5.5 qts mobil1 on the nose, did you give it time to drip down?I also put Red line synthetic in the tranny and Red line synthetic in the rear end.
T.

I would highly recommend AGAINST putting 7 quarts of oil in, it's extremely bad to over fill your oil. When you do this, you risk the oil level rising to the point where it submerges the bottom of the crank. In which case the crank will churn the oil up and get air bubbles in it, this is very hard on the oil pump and engine.

I am not suggesting 7 quarts for the street, but the reason is that LS1's starve the pickup in a left hand turn.

Generally, I agree that overfilling is bad. But even 7 quarts does not put the oil level high enough for the crank to get into it or whip it up.
